Johnnie Mae Conlee, age 90, died Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Sunshine Health Care. A native of Pontotoc County, she was born November 30, 1923 to Lonnie Simmons and Effie Hawkins Simmons. As a teenager she learned to sew at the N.Y.A. school in Pontotoc, part of President Roosevelt's New Deal. She then worked as a seamstress for Irwin B. As a teenager she learned to sew at the N.Y.A. school in Pontotoc, part of President Roosevelt's New Deal. She then worked as a seamstress for Irwin B. Schwabe Co. in New Albany, riding to work on Mr. Dorrough's bus with other employees. Since she consistently made "production", she was cited as an exemplary worker for new hires to observe. She retired from Irwin B. Schwabe in Ecru after thirty years. She was a faithful member of Bethany Primitive Baptist Church. She enjoyed keeping her home neat and attractive, growing pretty flowers and shrubs, and vacationing with family and friends. She took pride in her appearance and received compliments through the years about not looking her age and looking like she "just stepped out of a band box," even during the past two years when she resided at Magnolia Manor.

Services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with Elder Larry Wise and Rev. Greg Lassett officiating. Graveside service and burial will be in Ecru Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Mooney (Rex) of Ecru; three sisters: Nadine Baker of Pontotoc, MS, Joyce Doom (Harry) and Shirley Robbins (Darius) of New Albany, MS; a brother-in-law: Joe Conlee of New Albany, MS; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, Slay Hugh Conlee and a brother: Kenneth Simmons.

Pallbearers will be: Johnny Mounce, Jeff Mounce, Larry Horton, Gary Grisham, Terry Wise and Jerry Wise.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday and from 10 to 11 AM Saturday at the funeral home.
