Obituary

In the song of life, Jose Ortiz Aguilar was surely the composer. A very observant man who would rather spend his time creating than talking, Jose preferred to live in a world of harmony where everything around him made sense. In fact, he depended on his sensory world to provide him with concrete data. A free spirit, Jose believed that actions definitely spoke for themselves. He seemed to know what fit and what didn't fit in everything he did. Jose perceived that all of life's possibilities were open to him, yet he lived with a definite sense of purpose. He was a man who was always ready to share his creations with those around him. ...

Jose was born on August 1, 1949 at in a humble home in Calera, Zacatecas, Mexico. His parents were Jose Ortiz Miramontes and Josefa Aguilar Roman. Jose was raised in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico and emigrated to the U.S. In 1969 and made East Los Angeles his home until 1990 when he moved to El Monte, CA. As a young child, Jose was optimistic in his outlook. He sought out the possibilities in a given situation and looked for ways to apply his creative energies. Jose rarely calling attention to himself, but when he did speak out, his message was clearly understood by those around him.

Early on in his family relationships, Jose showed that he was a tolerant and flexible person, and he got along fairly well with everyone. He was raised with four siblings, Jesus, Candelario, Auxilio, and Luis. He was a calm and playful child who was adaptable to any situation.

Those who didn't know Jose well might not view him as being an outgoing person, those who called him their friend knew differently. Jose was shy and sensitive, a person who never forced his opinions and values on others. Close friends knew that his kindness was unmatched, and once you became a friend of Jose's, you understood how true a friend he could be. Later in life, he became friends with everyone that took the time to know him.

A person who was sensitive to others' feelings, modest and tolerant, Jose had the ability to become completely devoted to another when that affection was returned. On May 18, 1974, Jose exchanged wedding vows with his life partner Eva Esquivel at the Iglesia de la Virgen de Guadalupe, Victoria of Zacatecas, Mexico.

Jose was exceptionally sympathetic and compassionate when it came to his children. These emotional bonds made him as much playmate as parent. He gave his family unconditional love and kindness, sharing his artistic nature by turning everyday events into creative play. Jose was blessed with five children, two daughters, Marisol and Guadalupe, and three sons, Ramon, Jose, Omar and one Godson Alvaro. They were also blessed with two grandchildren, Raquel and Luis.

Jose found ways to enjoy what he did for a living. He worked hard and did his best to succeed every day. His primary occupation was cooking. He was employed for 40 years at the Jonathan Club. Jose tended to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done without imposing his will on others.

Jose enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. His favorite pursuits were gardening, home improvements and watching old Mexican classic movies at an old movie theatre, and he loved looking at old family photos. Jose was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others. He was relaxed in his approach to his leisure time because he wanted to savor the present moment.

Because he loved the world around him, Jose enjoyed traveling and going away on vacations. It was an opportunity for him to kick back and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Jose put his personal trademark on any leisure planning that he undertook. Favorite vacations included traveling with the entire family to Jerez, Zac. And enjoyed family outings on the river.

Jose was a lover of animals and cherished his pets. One of Jose's favorites was a very loyal chihuahua mix that misses him. They were best friends for six years. His family was rounded out by his yellow Lab, Sonic.

Jose's mission was to retire at age 62, but life had a different plan for him. Even though he didn't get a chance to retire, he enjoyed 61 years of life. Jose continued to stay in touch with his old friends while making plenty of new acquaintances. In later chapters of his life he enjoyed spending quality time with family and loved ones.

Jose passed away on October 22, 2010 at home, surrounded by his family and close friends. It was a very peaceful death. Jose fought a brave battle against non small cell lung cancer. He is survived by his wife Eva; his children, Ramon, Lupita, Jose, Marisol and Omar; his grandchildren Raquel and Luis.

Jose was a good man, a kind man, and a practical man who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being warm and deeply caring. He leaves behind him a treasury of life-long friendships and wonderful memories. Jose always had much to give and was able to make those connections in his life where his gifts were appreciated. Jose was a faithful, practical and loving person. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Jose Ortiz Aguilar.
