Fredericksburg, VA, and Orono - Joe A. Smyth, 31, passed away unexpectedly June 13, 2017, in Old Town. He was born December 4, 1985, at Beaufort, SC. Joe graduated from Orono High School in 2004, where he participated in soccer, hockey and baseball. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 2007 to 2013; serving in both Afghanistan and Iraq as a member of 2d Bn 9th Marines, attaining the rank of Corporal. He completed his service in the Marine Corps as a combat instructor at Officer Candidate School (OCS) Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA, training Marine officer candidates. At the time of his death Joe was training to be a certified welder through a VA program at Beal College, Bangor, ME. He is survived by his sons: Landon Wallace Smyth of Benton, ME, and Brody Kallen Smyth of Fredericksburg, VA; his wife Samantha Fredo Smyth of Fredericksburg, VA, his parents: Anne Marie Rotolo Smyth of Portland, ME, and Wallace H. Smyth of Charleston, WV, sister Ashley Marie Smyth of Del Ray Beach, Florida; brother Thomas W. Smyth and his wife Lyndsay of Windham, ME; and numerous members of his extended family throughout the United States. Joe will be missed by all who knew him. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, ME 04468. Burial with military honors will be conducted at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
