Obituary

Joseph Aguilera, a beloved father and husband, passed away in the comfort of his home in New Hyde Park, NY on July 13. He was 81 years old. "Joe" as everyone called him was born on December 8, 1932 to Frank and Maria Aguilera in New York City. He was one of five children. He was intelligent, loyal, and had a competitive spirit. Few people know he had a winning record as a boxer, which he did for a number of years to stay in shape in his late teens. Joe Aguilera was born to be a pilot.

He even earned his pilot's license before his driver's license at the age of 16. After World War II, his father actually bought him a surplus flight training plane, a BT-13 that came in a box. He and a friend built it, and he flew this plane to gain experience and become proficient at flying all over the Northeast.

After serving in the Army for two years, he quickly rose through the ranks of corporate aviation and got the experience required to be hired by Trans World Airlines in the early 60s. He started as a First Officer in the 707, became a Captain in the 727, and continued his success as an international airline pilot flying the "Queen of the Skies", the Boeing 747. His children and grandchildren loved listening to countless stories of his travel and experience around the world. He inspired a desire to travel, knowledge of geography, and an affinity for aviation with all the people he touched. Aviation and his family were his life and the two things he loved most.

While serving the Army, he met the love of his life, Germaine. In February, they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. He was a wonderful husband, father of five children, and grandfather of eight children. He always enjoyed family gatherings and often entertained the group with his stories, jokes, and sometimes singing and dancing.

Joe was also a man of strong faith and whose meaningful convictions helped create a spritual foundation for his children. He will be missed, but also remembered in so many ways.

Joe's family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations may be made in his memory to his favorite charity,
