Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2011.

Joseph Edward Alvin Armstrong

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Joseph Edward Alvin Armstrong at his residence on Sunday, October 30, 2011.

Joseph was born on June 12, 1926 in Stratton, Ontario to the late Thomas and Adeline Armstrong. He had worked as a papermaker at the local paper mill for 44 years. He had served with the Royal Canadian Army and was based in Camp Shylo before the war. He was prepared to ship out to the Pacific when the war ended. In earlier years he played snare drum with the Fort Frances Highlanders. He also was a long time serving member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, golfing and working on the family cabin. He also had a love for hockey and had coached the MEC hockey team. He was always attending his two sons hockey games including the Muskie and Rainy River State College games. He enjoyed travelling with his wife Grace and for the past 15 years they went south to Arizona.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Grace and their children Larry (Deb), Janice (Terry) and Darrell (Janey). Also surviving are grandchildren Jessica (Steven) Wong, Tiffany (Ian) Fang, Melissa Glowack, Krystal (Cameron) Bruyere, Erika (Clay) Armstrong, Jade Armstrong, step-grandsons Adrian (Louise) Campbell and Corey Bombay, great grandchildren Kyley, Kelly, Tien and their dogs, Alyssa, Kira, Sydney and Cheyenne, sisters Marg Poitras and Helen Lindholm.

He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Adeline Armstrong and siblings Vincent, Phillip, Bernard, Fran, Gerard and Maureen Fontaine.

A celebration of Joseph's life will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. and St. Mary's Church in Fort Frances, Ontario with Father Francis Pudicherry officiating. The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Color Party will provide a military tribute at the service.

Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.

The active pallbearers will be Ray Coran, Jim Lowey, Kirk Armstrong, Robbie Armstrong, Bruce Armstrong and Jack Stainke.

The honourary pallbearers will be Alvin's grandchildren.
