Joseph Atrashewski Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2013.

AGE: 82 • Manahawkin

Joseph Atrashewski, Jr., 82, died Friday in Southern Ocean Medical Center. Born in Newark, NJ, he formerly resided in Rahway and Clark before moving to Manahawkin in 1995. Joe was a proud veteran having served with the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the VFW Post 7363, Clark, NJ and American Legion Post 0232 Barnegat, NJ. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tuckerton.

After his retirement from the A&P Warehouse in Edison, Joe filled his time with his hobbies of fishing and gardening. He could make anything grow and his garden was famous for his "green thumb" = starting everything from seed in his sun parlor and he loved to talk about the birds that came to feast on the plants in his yard. And teaching a young person to fish was a special passion of his also!

Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Joan Addiss Atrashewski, a son Joseph III and his wife Cynthia, a daughter Linda Fitzgerald and her husband Richard. Grandchildren Nicole and Jenna Atrashewski and Ryan and Megan's husband Sean Carlin and a great-grandchild Luke Fitzgerald, and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends!

Calling hours will be Monday, Nov. 18th from 2-4 and 6-8pm at Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Ave., Manahawkin, NJ. Funeral will be Tuesday, November 19th starting at 10:00am at the Funeral Home and proceeding to the BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery where a service will be held in the chapel followed by interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Popcorn Park Zoo, Humane Way at Lacey Road, Forked River, NJ 08731. Condolences may be sent to www.shinnfuneralhome.com

Sorry to hear about Joe's passing, we grew up together I lived in North Elizabeth a few blocks from the Newark city line where Joe lived. We all hung out in his Father's tavern when we came out of service. Joe and I were on the same Med cruise in 51/52. Condolences to his wife Joan, and children he was a barrel of laughs, last time I saw him was in 1994 my son was vacationing on Long Beach Island and Joe was next door. I now live in Florida for the past 17 years.
