Joseph W. "Bill" Berry

CAYCE - Joseph W. "Bill" Berry, BMCM USCG, Ret. went to be with his Heavenly Father on Father's Day, June 17, 2012. Born on December 31, 1936, in Savannah, GA, he was the son of the late Joseph W. Berry and Dorothy M. Berry of Rincon, Georgia, and the father of his late daughter, Dorothy-Jo Berry. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara S. "Bobbi" Berry, born in Miami, Florida where she met and married Mr. Berry. Also surviving is his son, William R. Berry (Dale) of Warm Springs, Georgia; his brother, George R. "Renny" Berry (Joyce) of Green Cove Springs, Florida; nephew, Jeff Berry (Eva) of Callahan, Florida; niece, Pam Silvers (Rick) of Batavia, Ohio and his cousins, Dennis Daley (Dawn) and Mike Daley (Susan), both of Sylvania, Georgia.
Mr. Berry served in the Georgia National Guard and then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard where he served for 28 years and retired as a Master Chief Boatswain's Mate on May 1, 1980. He served in Cuba during the Missile Crisis and in Viet Nam 1966-1968, as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Army in the offloading and loading of ammunition and hazardous material at the Ammunition Depot in Cat Lai. During his time in the Coast Guard he was the officer-in-charge of many stations including the lighthouse station on Sullivans Island, SC, and the Coast Guard station in Marathon, Florida. Master Chief Berry received many citations and medals including the Coast Guard Achievement Medal which is the Coast Guard's highest award. He was a member Edwards Memorial ARP Church in Cayce and served as an elder for many years. His passion was working with World Witness, our denomination's mission board and raising support for the missions program.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012, at Edwards Memorial ARP Church located at 1600 Summerland Drive in Cayce, SC and conducted by the Rev. John M. Rogers. Contributions may be made to the church, or if you wish to World Witness, make your check payable to the church and earmark or note on it that you wish for your memorial gift to go to World Witness.
