Joseph William Cannon, age 90, went home to be with his Lord and be reunited with his loving wife, Helen, on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at his home in Port Orange, FL. Born July 29, 1922, in Greensboro, PA, he was the son of the former Arthur and a Lucille Cannon, Aliquippa, PA. He attended Aliquippa High School, which he left to serve our country in the United States Marine Corps. Joseph William Cannon, age 90, went home to be with his Lord and be reunited with his loving wife, Helen, on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at his home in Port Orange, FL.

Born July 29, 1922, in Greensboro, PA, he was the son of the former Arthur and a Lucille Cannon, Aliquippa, PA. He attended Aliquippa High School, which he left to serve our country in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Cannon entered the military on September 17, 1942, and served in active combat duty in World War II in the Marshall Islands, Territory of Hawaii, Marianas Islands, New Hebrides and Saigon. On February 15, 1943 he married his high school sweetheart Helen Hill in Aliquippa, PA. On July 3, 1944, he was seriously wounded in action and eventually received an Honorable Discharge on February 20, 1945. As a result of the injuries sustained by him while in combat action, he was awarded the Purple Heart on February 20, 1945.

Following his return home, he went to work at the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation Plant in Aliquippa, PA, as a pipefitter. During this time, he also served as a volunteer fireman for Raccoon Township Fire Department and Center Township Fire Department. Following his retirement in approximately 1977, he and his wife moved to Port Orange, FL.

Mr. Cannon was a founding and life member of Post 3282 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), where he remained active for many years, and was a volunteer driver for the VA.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Helen, on July 28, 2006; his brother, Melvin Cannon and his sisters, Doris Hawk, Neva Eckles and Ruth Nuzum and loving grandson Joseph (Jody) Druzak. Surviving him are his children, Kathleen (John) Druzak, Monaca, PA; Lucinda (Martin) Lease, Aliquippa, PA; and Joseph Bruce Cannon, together with a dear friend and caretaker, Sandra Hunter. He is also survived by a sister, Elva Jean Mundell, KY and 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thankfully acknowledge the wonderful and tender care provided by Hospice of Volusia County during the final days prior to his home going and his friends and family at Port Orange Christian church where he was a member.

Friends may call Tuesday (Today) 6-8 pm at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd. Port Orange. Funeral services will be held 10:00am Wednesday in the Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial, with Military Honors, in Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach.
