Joseph George Hellen, 92, of Kenneth City, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014. Mr. Hellen was born July 1, 1922, in Charleroi. After graduation from high school, he served in World War II, under General Douglas MacArthur’s Allied supreme military command in the South West Pacific. He served as assistant to the American Defense Counsel for Hideke Tojo in the International Tribunal for war criminals. In the U.S. Army, he was assistant to the supply officer for the Eighth Army Central Post Exchange, and after the war, he established Asia Pacific Inc., a trading company specializing in exporting heavy steel products to Africa, and built...

Joseph George Hellen, 92, of Kenneth City, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014. Mr. Hellen was born July 1, 1922, in Charleroi. After graduation from high school, he served in World War II, under General Douglas MacArthur’s Allied supreme military command in the South West Pacific. He served as assistant to the American Defense Counsel for Hideke Tojo in the International Tribunal for war criminals. In the U.S. Army, he was assistant to the supply officer for the Eighth Army Central Post Exchange, and after the war, he established Asia Pacific Inc., a trading company specializing in exporting heavy steel products to Africa, and built the second drive-in restaurant in Japan. His business experience overseas included service with American International Underwriters, Life Insurance Department, and for several years, he was their seventh leading salesman worldwide. He married Etsuko Kanayama and returned to Pennsylvania, where for 20 years he operated businesses in Monongahela. In 1977, he retired to Florida and continued to manage his investments. Mr. Hellen is survived by two daughters, Ilene Hellen and Kathleen Hellen; and a son, Mark Hellen; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death in 2007. Visitation will be held at SYLVAN ABBEY FUNERAL HOME on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 11a.m., followed by an 11a.m. graveside entombment at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park. Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
