I did not know Mr. Johnson as the intellectual giant that he was. To me, he was my Sunday School teacher and just an all around nice man. I grew up at Grace United Methodist Church with David and Randy as my friends and have never forgotten what a good family they came from. My prayers are with Mary Ann and all of his family, I know he is in a better place. Peace to you all.

I was fortunate to work on a number of noise research projects with Joe during my NACA-NASA career. He was seven years my senior, one of my role models and mentors, always approachable, always with the positive outlook. I recall the agreement he jokingly stipulated on our first project, "he would do the noise and I the aerodynamics". Sound like Joe? The Lord doesn't make them any better than Joe Johnson.

Goodness, it takes someone with a doctorate to even write Joe's obituary! We knew Joe as our wonderful neighbor in the north Ga. mtns. and looked forward to seeing he and Mary Ann every visit they made. Joe fished with Tim and would get upset with him because he was a "catch and release" fisherman. We had many great meals and laughs and always enjoyed each other's company. We can still picture him going out on his fishing boat alone to enjoy the lake. We will miss him terribly...heaven is lucky to have him! Love, Tim and Pam Pauley

JJ will always have a special place in my heart. One of the best bosses I've ever worked with. I treasure the fishing map he highlighted for me and my son Corey treasures his first shotgun that JJ provided. Many wonderful memories at the 30-by 60 Foot Full Scale Wind Tunnel.

I will always remember Joe and the look on his face when he would walk into the 12-Foot Tunnel, and with a smile say, "Why isn't the tunnel running?" Then he would ask to see the run log and the plots made from the day's runs, and he would discuss results from the day's runs and help plan for the next day's runs. Then he would make me bet a quarter on how something would turn out that we planned for the next day. I always looked forward to his visits to the tunnel, and as a young engineer at the time, I appreciated the time and knowledge he shared with me.

It was a honor and privilege to have known Joe. While I didn't work in his Branch, our friendship grew from our time hunting together. He was a man who was admired and respected. We have lost another great person from the :Great Generation". You will be missed my friend, God Speed!

I held Joe in esteem for his technical ability and, most of all, as a best friend. We worked long hours in the wind tunnels on the F-16XL version of the F-16. He was quick to find a solution to a major problem. I will cherish our times together on the bay and in Georgia trying to catch the biggest fish. God bless this precious man and his family.

Fond childhood memories of Saturday fishing trips and the reverence of a child, raised on NASA, who believes Joe Johnson was the embodiment of work ethic and innovation that made NASA and this nation great. Thanks for the memories Mr. Johnson!

It was a pleasure to know Joe. We arrived at NACA -Langley at about the same time. He was from Georgia Tech and I was from Auburn. While we never worked together in the same facility we did work together on many projects.

Joe Johnson was a solid inspiration and mentor. I am very fortunate to have had the exciting opportunity to work for him as a coop - his words still ring clearly and his motivation will always be felt. Joe was able to bestow an amazing amount of technical and practical insight that I am truly grateful for. Of all the wonderful guidance and support Joe gifted, I still can't believe he lent me his ~'68 Mustang (289cid/4sp!) his trust really taught me responsibility - in a hurry....

Thanks JJ

We were so blessed to have known this wonderful man. A truly outstanding scientist and engineer, and one of the finest human beings to walk this earth. Best wishes and prayers for Mary Ann and the boys.

I never had the pleasure of working in Joe's Branch at NASA but his influence reached beyond his Branch. I am blessed to have known him and a better engineer because of it.
