He was an only child, born June 13, 1928 to Walter James and Georgia Ann Shumaker in Fairmont, West Virginia. He worked for the Department of the Navy at the Puget Sound Navy Yard in Bremerton, Washington just prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corp at the age of 17. He is a World War II veteran.

He was a great camper, taking his family on annual vacations to Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks. In later years, he and Eve made daily trips to Huntington Beach to take walks on the pier. He was promoted to foreman having oversight of 306 employees. He obtained his high school diploma when he was 42 years old. In his retirement years, he was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, cared for his elderly mother, nurtured his grandchildren, and took care of his wife and youngest son during their prolonged illnesses.
Immediate survivors include his son Robert James Shumaker and wife Ernestine of North Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter Kathryn Ann Hottel and husband Tom of Oklahoma City, Ok.; Daughter-in-law Jamie Shumaker of Cypress, Ca.; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren.
