Joseph Michael Veltri passed away at St. Joseph's Medical Center to enter life with the Lord on December 17, 2010. He is preceded in death by his wife the late Katie A. Veltri. Joseph is survived by his son, Eugene W. Neri, his dear daughter in-law, Marlene I. Neri, grandsons, Mark J. Neri(Tracy), Christopher W. Neri(Shellie), Philip E. Neri(Gina), four great-grandchildren, Joshua Joseph Neri, Taylor Nicole Neri, Enzo Patrick Neri, Jordan Joseph Neri, two siblings, James Veltri(JoAnn), Mary Veltri and numerous nieces and nephews. Joseph was called to arms in 1942 as he volunteered for the military draft to defend his country. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1942 and honorably discharged on January 4, 1946 as a sergeant with the 24th Air Depot Group attached to the 20th Air Force United States Army Air Corps at the Separation Center, Camp Beale, California. He served in the South Pacific Theater on Guam, Tinian, Saipan, and various other posts of duty. Joseph was born in Glasco, New York to Italian immigrant parents and is predeceased by his parents and four brothers. Joseph came to Stockton in the late 1930's with his parents and several siblings and lived in Stockton for 73 years. After his discharge from the United States Army Joseph returned to Stockton and went to work for the City of Stockton completing his career in 1978 as a skilled carpenter with the Parks and Recreation Department. In his youth Joseph loved playing baseball and boxing including the Golden Gloves in New York State and competitive boxing in the United States Army in addition to teaching archery in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York with the CCC. Joseph's hobbies included his beloved carpentry and gardening. After retirement one would see Joseph manicuring his backyard making it look like a miniature Disneyland, or working in his shop making straight bows out of osage orange wood or bird houses to be raffled off for the benefit of his church's bazaars at the Cathedral of Annunciation. At Joseph's request there will be no formal services, however, Joseph will be privately honored by his immediate family. Frisbie-Warren & Carroll is entrusted with the arrangements.
