Josephine Florence (Savini) Roy passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 19, 2016, surrounded by friends and family.
Josephine (Josie) was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Her parents, Pasquale and Anna Savini, were from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Josephine and her eight siblings were proud of their Italian heritage. She graduated from Woonsocket High School and worked for the United Public Market in Woonsocket, where she met her future husband, Roger Marcel Roy. She married Roger in 1943 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where Roger was stationed in the Army Air Corps.
In 1947 Josie and Roger relocated with their young son Richard and Roger’s sister Pauline and parents Adelard and Antoinette Roy to southern California. They settled in the San Fernando Valley. In California they had four more children, various pets, and many wonderful friends and extended family. After her kids were in school, Josie worked at FedCo, Bullock’s Department Store, and eventually the Los Angeles Unified School District as a school financial manager.
Josie and Roger settled in Paso Robles, California after their retirement from the Los Angeles schools.
Josie loved to travel. She and Roger traveled throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. They also went to Jamaica, Europe, the United Kingdom, and South America. Josie loved to read, camp, volunteer in her children's many activities, garden and to cook. She was involved in church and community activities. She also loved to tell family stories and stories of her travels. If you came to visit, she made sure you never went away hungry.
Josie loved her family and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her brother, George Savini of Penfield, NY; her five children, Richard Roy and Celsa Spina of La Jolla, CA; Roberta Roy of San Diego, CA; Russell Roy of San Pablo, CA; Steven Roy and Patricia Wymond of Arlington, WA; and Karen Roy and Sharon Newman of Richmond, CA; one grandson Tyler Roy and Halia Obrey, and one great granddaughter, Kaiulani Roy and many nieces and nephews.
