Joy Lawson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2017.

Lawson, Joy Smothers, R.N., B.A.
Joy Smothers Lawson, R.N., 77, of Phoenix died peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. She was born in Dyer, TN on November 17, 1939. Joy and family moved to the Valley in 1967, when her husband, Dr. Jim Lawson, previously deceased June 2012, was stationed at Luke Air Force Base. Joy and Jim moved off base in 1968, into the family residence in Central Phoenix where Joy resided for 49 years. Joy was known to be the living embodiment of her name. She did not know a stranger, and was always ready, willing and able to help, assist, and care for others. She greatly enjoyed medical mission trips with her church in recent years. She is survived by her daughter, Shawn Lawson, of Phoenix, son, Kevin Lawson and his husband Gary Burnett, of Flagstaff, son Shannon Lawson and his wife Emily, two grandsons: Luke and Keegan, of Phoenix, and her brother James Smothers and his wife Mary, of Ringgold, GA, her brother Marion Smothers and his wife Marilyn, of Pinson, TN, and her sister Beverly Smothers of Paris, TN. A "JOY"ful Celebration of Her Life will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary with a catered luncheon following in Page Hall at Orangewood Presbyterian Church, 7321 N. 10th Street, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Orangewood Presbyterian Church – Missions or Arts Alive funds. www.ALMoore-Grimshaw.com

I had the great pleasure of working with Joy many long years ago at Teilborg, Sanders & Parks (now called Sanders & Parks), where she was a nurse consultant in the medical malpractice defense section. She was universally kind and cheerful and personable to everyone she met and made the world a brighter and happier place just by being in it. I am sorry to know that her time on this old earth has ended, but hope to see her again one day in that beautiful world just outside our mortal sight. May we all endeavor to be like Joy, and brighten the lives of those around us! xoxo

Shawn Dear, your mother was such a happy person, always a smile at the MAC . We got to know her at the OTL series, she and Harley were always together. This loving person will always be on my mind and missed but know she is at peace now, no more pain. Gary & RustyB

I know that words provide small comfort at a time like this. Nevertheless, praise God your mother has graduated to Heaven and her pain is no longer with her - a precious gift from our Lord and Saviour. May the closeness of your love with her and your memories of time together sustain you in your grief. Susan & Tony Makridis, Greekfest

"I only knew Joy for a short period of time through luncheons for Legal Nurse Consultants. She welcomed me and was a JOY and pleasure to meet. She introduced me to her sister Beverly as we all sat together at the last meeting she and I attended together. Her warm and loving smile with conversation will be missed. May God bless her family". -Beverly Jackson

We all enjoyed having Joy in Cleveland Tn. every spring and fall, for our twice a year luncheons. One year Joy had us down to the farmhouse for a home cooked meal of crock pot pork chops and all the sides to go with them. Wow Joy was a great cook and a very loved cousin to us here in Cleveland. She will be missed! Rest in peace dear cousin. Tim Hyde Betty Davis Hicks Kenneth Hicks
