Joyce Pallagut Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2017.

Those that are born of the "greatest generation" continue to teach us so much. They seem wiser about relationships, productivity, family, wealth, and service to others. It certainly could be said of Joyce Ann Wallace Pallagut. She worked all of her life at a job she loved, cherished her beautiful family, was cautious with her finances and put others before herself. On September 6, 2017 she passed away peacefully as her daughters held her hands.
Joyce's life will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on September 22, 2017 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with Reverend BJ Owens officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall and Thursday from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at Tammy Mink-Hayes' residence, 3101 Madison Ave., Greensboro, NC 27403.
Joyce was born in Charlotte to the late Zeb Lee and Nell Aycock Wallace and graduated from Greater Central High School. Following graduation she immediately started work with GMAC from which she retired with over 45 years of service. Through her closest friends, Emily and Bob Katz, she met Leonid "Junie" Pallagut. After they married on August 25, 1951, Junie's work took them to Denver in the late 1950's and then to Greensboro in 1959 to work in his father's engraving business and at this time Joyce continued her employment with GMAC. Joyce and Junie enjoyed traveling for DESA (Destroyer Escort Sailor Association) conventions, taking their daughters to the coast, especially Myrtle Beach, and were active members of the Elk's Club. They were members of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church since 1960 where Joyce served as a Sunday school teacher, made her memorable pound cake for the bazaar and faithfully worshipped at the 8 AM service every Sunday.
She had a vibrant spirit which attracted people to her and she built life- long friendships with her coworkers with whom she enjoyed monthly luncheons. Joyce was kind and caring and was passionate about helping others. Her daughters recall wonderful memories of the house full of mouth watering aromas as Sunday dinner was prepared. She took time to teach her grandchildren how to bake her delicious pound cake, lemon bars and everyone's favorite dressing. Christmas was made even more special because Joyce found absolute joy in selecting china for the table setting, a trait she inherited from her mother and grandmother. Her favorite spot in town to eat was Yum Yum's where she would indulge in the black cherry ice cream. Joyce enjoyed reading books about history and the monarchy, was talented at needlepoint and liked to watch old movies, Antique Road Show and the History Channel.
She is survived by her daughters, Tammy Mink-Hayes (Jeff) of Greensboro and Teresa Cannady (Rux) of Danville, VA; grandchildren, Matthew Cannady, Joshua Cannady, Mallory Mink, and Robb Cannady (Devin); precious great granddaughters, Walker and Josie Cannady; special nieces and nephew, Robin, Lisa, Jana, Becky and Willie; and cousins, Charles Ford (Ira) and Andy Aycock. In addition to her parents and spouse she is preceded in death by brother, Leonard Wallace and sister, Rose Lackey.
Joyce was with Beacon Place for only a short time and her daughters are grateful for the care and attention that was paid to Joyce and them. The family also thanks the friends on Robinhood Drive who took such good care of and looked after Joyce.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church or Beacon Place. Online condolences may be offered at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com. Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel is assisting the family.
