Joyce Pierson Guckert, 89, of Lake Mary, FL, formerly of Charleston, IL, passed away pn November 26, 2016 in Florida. Joyce was born September 30, 1927 in Akron, OH. She was the daughter of the late Leland and Agnes Pierson. She married the love of her life John Guckert in 1950. They celebrated 59 loving years together. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Schnorf and husband Jim of Longwood, FL and Lisa Cox and husband Wayne of Chesterfield, MO; and two grandchildren, John Schnorf of Tampa, FL and Lisa Schnorf of Longwood, FL. She also leaves behind her loving Granny Nannies and her Oakmonte Village Assisted Living family. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brother and sister-in-law Jim and Ann Pierson.
Joyce graduated from Worhtington, OH High School and went to receive her Bachelor's Degree in Education and her Master's Degree in Guidance/Reading from the Ohio State University. She taught elementary and junior high school from 1949-1968. She started working for Lake Land Community College in Mattoon, IL in 1971 as Director of the Reading Study Skills Center and as a Counselor/Instructor. While at Lake Land she developed and taught speed reading courses, wrote grants, worked with GED instructors, providing tutoring for public schools, developed individual learning centers and conducted diagnostic reading tests on more than 16,000 students until her retirement in 1984. After retiring she co-authored several reading studies books with her long time co-worker from Lake Land and dear friend, Judy Vaughn.
She moved with her husband and daughter Karen and her family to FL in 1998. There she became very active in the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, DAR, Lake Mary Women's Club and the Heathrow Women's Club. She enjoyed traveling around the U.S., especially AZ, with her husband, and always enjoyed being with her family and close friends. Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She never knew a stranger and always had a smile on her face and a positive atttitude. Her life touched many and she will be greatly missed.

I had great admiration for Joyce and send sympathy to her daughters. I was hired by Lake Land to work with Judi in 1984 when Joyce retired. They had established a fine
program in the Reading Center which I was
fortunate to step into. I learned much from Joyce whose work ethic was boundless! I know you are proud of your mom!
