Graveside service will be in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY at the family plot beside her husband, James Cayford Hill, Esq. at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Relatives and friends are invited to call at JOSEPH GAWLER'S SONS, 5130 Wisconsin Ave. NW. (corner of Harrison St.) Washington, DC 20016 on Thursday, June 20 from 3 to 6 p.m. Joyce Tanner Hill was born April 18, 1932. The daughter of Albert and Mary McClure Tanner. She was raised in White Plains, NY. After graduation from White Plains High School in 1949, she attended Columbia University. She later completed her BA degree at the University of the District of Columbia during her retirement years. Joyce Hill was the widow of James Cayford Hill, Esq. The couple married in Scarsdale, NY, after completion of his law degree at New York University. They moved to Washington, DC upon his appointment to the staff of The Veterans Administration and later to the legal staff of The Department of the Treasury. Joyce Hill's career in Washington, DC was varied and challenging. She first served as private secretary to W. Averell Harriman during his retirement years, as he prepared his memoirs. She also served on the congressional staffs of Senator Hubert Humphrey, Senator John Breckinridge and Senator Claiborne Pell. The Hill's maintained residences on Capitol Hill and the Chesapeake Bay at Hooper's Island, MD. Avid gardeners and sailors, they traveled widely in the United States, Canada and England. In retirement, Mrs. Hill took up environmental causes, calling for cleanup of the Bay and opposing a plan announced by the Federal Government to exterminate a portion of the Bay's swan population. Her husband, James Hill was truly a renaissance man: accomplished craftsman and interior decorator. He renovated and decorated both of their houses. A talented pianist, he specialized in the Chopin repertoire. He was also a talented portrait and landscape artist. The couple had a wide selection of antiques, paintings and musical instruments, including pianos and harpsichords. Survivors include Mrs. Hill's brother, John Tanner and his son, Colin Tanner, Esq. of California; and Mr. Hill's brother, Harry Hill and family of New York.
