Juanita Louise "Nita" MacLeod, 74, of Southport passed away Saturday, February 13, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, NC.
Nita was born April 15, 1941, daughter of the late Alvin and Juanita Johnson Bemarkt. She began her career at Skinner and Cook Construction in New Jersey where she worked for 20 years, and then for the remainder of her career she was in management at Tar Heel Paper and Supply Company in Winston-Salem, NC. Nita was also co-owner of Carnation Corner Florist and Gifts in Kernersville, NC with her husband George. Preceding her in death were her parents, step-mother, and brother-in-law Steve Jurechko.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, George Henry MacLeod, Jr of Southport; step-sons, Stephen Hiatt of Connecticut and George Henry MacLeod, III of New Jersey; step-daughter, Rebecca Culver of New Jersey; sisters, Barbara Orlandella of Massachusetts and Nancy Jurechko of Florida; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nephews.
In 2012, Nita and her husband relocated to Southport, NC where she will be greatly missed by her Rivermist friends and neighbors.
Besides her husband George, Nita loved and enjoyed her favorite dog, Chrissie, playing cards, gardening, music, stamp collecting and living in Southport.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1-2pm, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Oh George, I am so sad to hear this news. What a JOY Juanita was to me and the rehab team. I have missed that beautiful smile and always lovely attitude since the day she left the rehab center. Praying for you George.

I'll always be grateful for Nita's friendship. I will treasure the good times and trips we had to the Jersey shore while I was in high school and college.
