Juanita L. Stephens of Lubbock departed this world on Friday, June 14, 2013. She was born to Marion and Gladys Simpson on May 6, 1926 in Jayton, Texas. Throughout her 87 years, Juanita touched numerous lives. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1944 and then pursued her teaching degree at Hardin Simmons University. From there, Juanita taught high school language arts and journalism in Tahoka, Texas. It was there that she met the love of her life Burt Stephens. The two married in 1946.

Shortly after marriage, Juanita and Burt moved to Lubbock. Juanita worked as an office manager at Merchants and ICX motor freight companies. Later, she was an office manager for Good News Book Store, where she retired in 1999. While always dedicated to her professional endeavors, she was more dedicated to the needs of her family. Juanita was a devout mother and often sacrificed her own desires to provide for her family. Juanita put her Christian beliefs above all. She went to church and Sunday School each week and instilled the word of the Lord in her family. She was a Sunday School teacher and member for many years at Trinity Baptist Church and later joined Southcrest Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents Marion and Gladys Simpson, her beloved husband of 46 years Burt Stephens and daughter –in- law Sherilyn Stephens. Those left to cherish her memory is a sister Helen Draper and husband Bill of Big Spring; children, Mark Stephens and wife Cindy of Lubbock, Mike Stephens and wife Barbara of Lubbock and Marilyn Peebles and husband Mike of Round Rock. Five grandchildren, Josh, Jon, Matthew, Julianne and Morgan as well as 5 great-grandchildren that Juanita constantly doted over, Taylor, Allie, Palmer, Graham and Caroline.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, Monday June 17th from 6:30 – 8:00 PM. Services will be held at Southcrest Baptist Church Tuesday June 18th at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sherilyn Stephens library at Lubbock, 3511 10th street, Lubbock, Texas 79415 806-745-0700 or a charity of your choice.

All left behind will forever cherish the wisdom and memories Juanita leaves behind.

"Doc, please know of my sorrow in the loss of your Mom. Her legacy continues to live through you and yours. All my best, friend." David Miller (Lubbock, TX)
