Julianna Catharina Thomas "Babcia", age 97, longtime resident of Barnes WI passed away on December 29, 2014. She was born February 6, 1916, in Chicago Illinois to Stanislaus and Paulina (Mincus) Sajdak.
Julia met her husband Fred while working at Campbell's Soup in Chicago where she began work in 1935 and retired in 1979. She and Fred bought their cabin in Barnes in the 1950's and built their retirement home on the same property in the 1970's where they enjoyed many years of fishing and visits from family and friends coming to the northland to enjoy the lake. While Julia was still working at Campbell's Soup, she would drive to Barnes on the weekends and work on the new home and then drive back to Chicago to work on Monday.
Julia worked hard and was devoted to her job at Campbell's Soup. As one story goes, during a blizzard that hit the Chicago area, Julia walked several blocks to get to work only to find she was the only one who showed up that day.
Julia, against her will, put her step ladder away only three years ago. She insisted that her curtains had to be changed out for the winter months and would not inform anyone that this needed to be done; after all "She could do it herself!" Although this kind of determination stressed everyone around out, she didn't see what the "big deal" was. She always said, "If something needs to be done, I do it!"
In recent years, Julia was a frequent rider on the "Thursday Bus" to Hayward to do her shopping and attended seniors lunch at the Barnes Town Hall. She enjoyed her time with her "grandsons" Seth & Ryan and extended family and friends for picnics and pontoon rides around Upper Eau Claire.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hayward WI and was devoted to her Catholic faith and her St. Josephs family.
Julia was preceded in death by her husband Fred in 1989.
