Julius Samuel Piver, M.D., J.D. died at home on the evening of March 22, 2012, surrounded by his loving wife of 57 years and his devoted children.

In addition to his wife, Louise Rubin Piver, he is survived by his three children, Susan Piver Browne (Duncan Browne III), David Piver (Zea), and Carol Hanna (Ed Korn), as well as his sons- and daughter-in-law, Duncan Browne III, Zea Piver, and Ed Korn, and his brother, M. Steve Piver, M.D. He has three grandchildren, Duncan Browne IV, Forrest Piver, and Allison Hanna and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. He will be deeply missed by all.

Doctor, lawyer, author, World War II veteran, and a lifelong resident of the District, Dr. Piver was born in 1924. His parents, Harry and Sonia, owned Piver's Delicatessen on 14th Street. He attended Central High School (now called Cardozo) and was a member of the citywide Jewish fraternity, Upsilon Lamba Phi fraternity. During W.W. II, he served his country by working in the Army Medical Corps overseas and then obtained both his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from George Washington University before beginning a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as Past President, Washington Graduate Club, Phi Delta Epsilon, Medical Fraternity and Past President, Jacobi Medical Society. His medical career spanned more than 50 years until his retirement in September, 2011. He delivered more than 4,000 babies and gave excellent care to thousands of women, specializing in offering treatment for infertility. He served as Clinical Chairman, Department of Gynecology at The Washington Hospital Center from 1975-1980. In 1986, he obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from The Washington College of Law at American University. While continuing to practice medicine throughout, Dr. Piver developed a concurrent career as a medical legal consultant, offering expert opinions in cases throughout the country and contributing numerous articles to scholarly journals and publications in both the medical and legal fields. He continued to practice law until February, 2012.

Dr. Piver loved music and art and was an avid golfer and gin rummy player. He was a long-term member of the Woodmont Country Club and The Progress Club. He will be remembered for devotion to his friends (some of whom dated back more than 70 years) with unfailing birthday and anniversary cards.

In 1955, Dr. Piver married another native Washingtonian, Louise Rubin, whose father owned the grocery store Larimer's. Throughout their 57 years of marriage, they enjoyed playing golf together, taking trips, often with their children and grandchildren, and socializing with their large circle of lifelong friends.

"Dear Mrs. Piver and Family, It was over the last few days that Dr.P came to my mind quite a few times and finally I said I need to look him up and see how..." Judy Henneke (Edgewater, MD)
