June Higgins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 11, 2016.

Ralph and Opal gave birth to little Virginia June Pickle at home in College View, Nebraska on May 31, 1924. Little did her parents know that she would be the first of five children.

June completed the entirety of her formal education in her hometown of Lincoln; she started off in small classroom just down the street from her house and ended at Union College. After graduation she felt something was missing from her life – a person with whom she could walk to Christ -- so she went in search of a handsome farm boy. She moved to Topeka, Kansas with a girlfriend to find love and work. It was a big move for two young girls who had never been far from home. In fact, it was her first time away from family and out of the state of Nebraska. While working at the Kansas Conference office, June found what she was looking for.

She met her husband in Topeka, and after an 18-month courtship they married in March of 1948. The government drafted Duane Higgins while he was a student at Union. Upon completion of their sacrifices for God and country, June and Duane decided to move to Madison College, Tennessee to further Mr. Higgins education. June gave birth to their eldest son, Duane Earl, during this time at Madison. After Duane’s graduation, they returned to Topeka and June was once again employed by the Kansas conference.

Three years later Duane was invited to return to Madison to work in the business office. After their stint in Kansas, June was happy to return to Tennessee. It was a farm boy she wanted, not the life of a farmer’s wife.Three years in Tennessee was enough, employment awaited them at Watkins Memorial Hospital in Elli Jay, Georgia. In 1962 they moved to Orlando where June worked for Florida Hospital until she retired 25 years later.

June is survived by her 3 children, Duane Earl Higgins, Richard Allen Higgins and Pamela Jean Rutledge. June has been blessed with five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

June enjoyed volunteering with Give Kids the World, being a member of the Red Hat Society, shopping, and most of all spending time with family and friends.
