Karen Ashley Greenstone departed this life on June 15, 2017. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 3, 1950 to Irma Mary Oser Heller and Dr. Michael M. Heller. She graduated from The Academy of the Sacred Heart, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the Newcomb School at Tulane University. She also received a master's degree in teaching from Middlebury College in Vermont. She had a long and successful career teaching English as a Second Language at Loyola University. She is survived by her brother Danny Heller of New Orleans, her sister Maria Cimini Sangria of Atlanta, and her sister Janet Heller Voelker (Richard) of Mandeville, as well as her nieces, Ananda Heller, Zia Heller, Kristen Burga Lusk, Lindsay Burga Click, Allison Burga Kelley, Lauren Nicole Voelker, and her nephew Patrick Michael Voelker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Michael M. Heller, and her sister Sandra Heller Burga, (John). She also leaves behind many students, colleagues and friends who admired her many accomplishments and loved her dearly. She was a person of deep humility, extraordinary faith, great intellect, with a kind, gentle and loving heart. Karen lived a simple, but very meaningful life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
The family extends special thanks to the staff of Passages Hospice, as well as Karen’s caregivers, Alisha, Azeena, Clara and Pam. To the many loving friends who assisted and visited during Karen’s final illness, far too numerous to recognize individually, our deepest and sincerest love and appreciation. Karen was truly blessed!
Services will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1031 South Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, beginning with visitation at 9:30 am, and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am. A reception at St. Andrew’s will follow the services. She will rest in peace at the Columbarium upon the grounds of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where Karen was a devoted member of the congregation, be thoughtfully considered.

What a truly loving and kind soul. She was a childhood friend that I gratefully reconnected with in the last two years. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

Karen was a dear and trusted colleague in teaching English as a Second Language at Loyola University. I always admired the way she cared deeply about her students and was dedicated to serving them. Her spiritual journey was extraordinary; in visiting her a month or so before her passing, I was impressed at how she felt at peace with her medical decisions and with her imminent leaving us. I will miss her and always wish she had more time with us and with her students.

Karen was such a kind and gentle person whenever we'd meet over the years, at a group spiritual meeting or in the faculty Common Room at Loyola. We were lucky to know her. Condolences to her family and all who loved her.

It was wonderful to see Karen at our last reunion at Ninette's home. Her brilliance was only outshined by her kindness! She is in my prayers.

Karen and I met at Sacred Heart in sixth grade. We shared many wonderful experiences together through high school. Karen was one of my bridesmaids at my wedding. We stayed in touch all of our lives and I will miss her quiet grace and generosity of spirit exceedingly.
