Kenneth Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2013.

Kenneth Melvin Davis, 88, passed away October 17, 2013 in Arlington, WA. He was born to Melvin and Myrtle Davis October 15, 1925 in Azwell, WA, and grew up in Chelan, WA. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Kenneth spent his career as an educator. He was a teacher, Jr. Hi. principal in Sunnyside, WA and high school vice-principal and principal in Edmonds, WA. Kenneth was a beloved father, brother and husband. He loved playing baseball, camping, riding his trail bike in the hills above Lake Chelan, road trips on his Goldwing. He was a great story teller around the campfire and a good camp cook. He was a not so fearless hunter. Kenneth was steadfast in his friendships, a principled leader as a school principal, loyal, dutiful, displayed exquisite penmanship and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a rock on whom others depended. In his words "Trying and failing is OK, but failing to try is not OK." Preceding Kenneth in death was his first wife Evelyn Florence Dickes in 1990, brother Howard Davis, sister Evelyn Fowler, step-daughter Cynthia Christensen. He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn June Davis; daughter Sandy (Tom) Goodrum of Elk Grove, CA; sons, Gary (Peggy) Davis of Auburn, WA, Larry (Carolyn) Davis of Custer, WA, Kirk (Bea) Davis of Granite Bay, CA, stepdaughter Pam (Ed) Giecek of Arlington, WA, stepson Mark (Lynn) Christensen of Fairfax, VA, sister-in-law Dorothy Davis, brother-in-law Carl Fowler, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 25, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at Olympic Place Retirement and Assisted Living Community, 20909 Olympic Place, Arlington, WA.

Dianne Rogers Stewart, Class of `72, Woodway High School

Woodway High School, Edmonds, Washington was a very special place. One of those reasons was Ken Davis, our principal & a very special man. I graduated 51 years ago from Woodway, but my memories still shine bright from a magical time. Recently, we lost Art teacher Brad Sarvis & Physics teacher Ray Smith. We have also lost Drama teacher, Joan Teachman & Home Economic teacher Cora Mae Kintz McMurray. I am sure there are many others that are gone. My vivid memories of Woodway are enhanced by kind educators, Ken Davis being one of those. Woodway enriched my life in many ways. A special place where those memories remain indelible and untouched. I have attended all reunions except 2 and have enjoyed a past that has endured the generations. The quality of staff and leadership that Woodway offered is unparalleled and uncommon. Here´s to the memories and the education we received. We were blessed.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family in your time of grief. As time passes may all of you, family and friends, feel comforted by the support of others and the memories of a long life well lived. Ken Davis was a fine professional, an outstanding leader, a man of integrity.

He taught me to really appreciate chemistry. He would introduce his classes to the mole, a term used in chemistry, by playing the theme to 2001 A Space Odyssey and wheeling a stuffed mole out on a laboratory cart. It was an intro that caught everyone's attention, and I'm sure few ever forgot it. RIP Mr. Davis. Greg Day, Woodway Class of 1979

My thoughts go out to all of the family. I knew "Mr Davis" through his sons, Gary and Larry. We lived across the street from each other and played sports together nearly everyday. It is a tribute to Ken that the values and virtues that he so clearly represented were mirrored by his sons. God bless.

Ken's great qualities shone through, even in the short time I knew him.

I remember Ken - what a guy. He and Dad were motorcycle buddies and lifelong friends. Growing up with the twins I saw firsthand what a devoted father and leader of his community. My sincerest sympathies to Larry, Gary, Sandy & Kirk and their families.

I remember when the Davis family mooved in across the street on 75th Ave W. in Edmonds. 2 boys (twins) that were close in age to my brother and I, A really nice older sister who became one of our favorite sitters, a really nice mom, and a dad with more muscles than I had ever seen in real life. Your dad was big and strong and very gentle and kind to us neighbor kids. He took an interest in us and he would answer all our questions about his great big yellow Honda Gold Wing, even when we asked the same questions over and over. Your dad always was kind to me even when I got in trouble at shcool. I never felt he was ever unfair or unkind. I really liked your dad and I feel your loss and am praying for you all.

Personally, I thought Ken would live forever. He was truly an amazing person. We were neighbors in Edmonds and he was my Dad's best friend for many years. I remember laughingly the beard growing contest they held one year! My thoughts and prayers are with Evelyn, Sandy, Larry, Gary and Kirk. What great memories we all have from growing up in our neighborhood. Blessings to all of you,
Pat (Tuttle) Latshaw

I only know this man through the two of his children. I can say, through those relationships, that he must have been a wonderful father and I can see through the other comments that he reached many through his influence with others.

I'm sure he will be missed.

Mr. Davis was a great man and Principal at Woodway High. His twin sons made me a better person as we ran together on the track team in 1970 when I was a senior and they were sophomores. May he rest in peace! Woodway; class of 1970!

Mr. Davis was a man of integrity and honor. As a principal students appreciated his leadership and his passion for education. We also thought it was really cool that he drove a motorcycle to school. My thoughts are with the family.

I enjoyed my years as teacher under Ken and we shared many memories the last time I saw him. Sorry to realize you and Ken did not have many years together but know that you all cherished every minute. I lost Bill a year ago and it has been quite lonesome without him. My sympathy to you and all your family.
