Kent was born in Hayward, Ca. He attended Petaluma High School and graduated from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
He started his career as a test engineer at Aeroject General in Azusa, CA and was then transferred to Aerojet Nuclear, a former contractor for the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). At Aerojet Nuclear, he began working in quality engineering and managed an organization which designed and fabricated the Seminole Mod II and III test systems. He was responsible for the fabrication of nuclear test train assemblies for the thermal fuels behavior program. In 1985 he became Quality Manager for EG&G Idaho, Inc. In 1988 he accepted the position as Director of Reliability and Quality Assurance for EG&G Florida. He managed an organization which performed Reliability Analysis, Quality Engineering, Nondestructive Examination and pressure vessel recertification activities on ground support equipment at Kennedy Space Center, FL. He finished his professional career at Argonne National Laboratory-West as Project Manager of the Waste Characterization Facility.
Kent retired in 1993 and pursued his passion for the great outdoors of Idaho! He was an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed: hunting, 4-wheeling, and snow machining with his friends and family. He expanded his love of firearms and became an FFL dealer. Kent enjoyed many years as a Boy Scout leader in CA and ID. He was always a self-starter, including designing and building 3 homes by himself in scenic Idaho locations. He and his wife Nikki were snowbirds who resided in Quartzsite, AZ/Bullhead City, AZ during the winters and were always excited to return to their "Home" in Ashton, ID.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nikki (Ashton, ID). His three children: Todd Therp (Rigby, Id), Terri Therp (Idaho Falls, ID) and Tina Therp (Pocatello, ID). He has 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother Thomas Therp and sister Joanne Farah.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home 825 E. 17th St. in Idaho Falls, with Pastor Bob Sherwood, officiating.
