Kurt Uebele, 88, of South Orleans, Massachusetts, and formerly of Westfield, New Jersey died Tuesday, December 24, 2013. Kurt was born on August 28, 1925 in Wangen, Germany, son of the late Emilie H. Uebele and Reinhold K. Uebele. He immigrated to the United States at the age of two with his parents.

Kurt joined the Army in 1943 after graduating from Summit High School in New Jersey. In the Army, he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and took part in the Normandy invasion. Upon returning home from the service, he married Kathryn "Jean" Uebele.

After the Army, he enrolled at Seton Hall College in South Orange, NJ. At the end of his junior year, his Marine reserve number was selected and he was assigned to Camp Pendleton, California as a Rifle Range Instructor during the Korean conflict. A year later he returned to Seton Hall where he received his Bachelor's of Science in engineering.

Kurt worked for the Union Carbide Corporation as an industrial engineer. He later transferred to the Duro-Test Corporation where he was employed until his retirement at the age of sixty-two. During his working career, Kurt and his family frequently vacationed on Cape Cod where he and Jean later built their retirement home.

After moving to South Orleans, Kurt was a member of the Federated Church of Orleans, and was active in the Newcomer's Club, Chequessett Golf Club, and the Old Men's Softball League.

Kurt is survived by his wife of 65 years, and their daughters Karen J. Uebele, of York, Maine and Kathi U. Whitaker, of South Orleans, MA. He was "Gampy" to granddaughters Kelsey C. Whitaker and Courtney P. Whitaker. He also leaves his sister, Ruth Glasbrenner of Pennsburg, PA. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 11th at 2 PM at the Federated Church of Orleans. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his memory be made to Snow Library in Orleans or to The Federated Church of Orleans.

Afterglow

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun;
Of happy memories that leave when life is done.
