LaRue was born in 1927 in Boston MA to Windsor Arnold Hosmer and Elizabeth Torrence Tone Hosmer. His father was one of the first professors in the Harvard Business School and his mother graduated from Wellesley College. LaRue completed three degrees from Harvard, including his Doctorate in Business Administration. LaRue joined University of Michigan in 1971 and became a full Professor in 1976. He spent his sabbaticals teaching at wonderful schools including Stanford, Yale, Oxford, University of Virginia, University of Alabama and others. He focused on interdisciplinary ethics where he could include students of law, nursing, medicine, engineering, liberal arts and business to address ethical challenges from opposing angles for a moral business solution. He often referred to his most recent book, Avoiding Corporate Breakdowns, as the culmination of his life's work.

LaRue was a generous supporter of formal and informal education. Ten years ago he created the Hosmer Faculty Lunch Series at University of Michigan, Ross School of Business, which continues as an interdisciplinary opportunity for faculty growth. LaRue was also generous with scholarships, including a professorship in his mother's name at the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
