William Lacy Mahon, Jr. born June 2, 1924, in Jacksonville, Florida, died on Friday, February 8th. Mr. Mahon was the son of William Lacy Mahon, Sr., a long time practicing attorney and Judge in Jacksonville, and Lucille Brinkley Mahon. He was the grandson of William Lacy Challenor Mahon, who, in 1905, founded Main Street Baptist church in Jacksonville. He attended Mattie B. William Lacy Mahon, Jr. born June 2, 1924, in Jacksonville, Florida, died on Friday, February 8th. Mr. Mahon was the son of William Lacy Mahon, Sr., a long time practicing attorney and Judge in Jacksonville, and Lucille Brinkley Mahon. He was the grandson of William Lacy Challenor Mahon, who, in 1905, founded Main Street Baptist church in Jacksonville. He attended Mattie B. Rutherford grammar school, Kirby Smith Junior High School and Andrew Jackson High School.
Mr. Mahon served in World War II as a bombardier navigator. Following his release from the Army, he attended the University of Florida where he was a member and President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was also a member of Phi Delta Phi honorary legal fraternity, Florida Blue Key and the University of Florida Hall of Fame. Upon his graduation from the University of Florida, College of Law in 1949, he joined his father's law firm in Jacksonville, where he continued practicing until his retirement in 2007. Mr. Mahon practiced with his brother, Harry Mahon and later with his son, Mark H. Mahon and Russell Healey.
During his years as an attorney, Mr. Mahon also served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1953 to 1955. He was elected to the office of County Solicitor (prosecuting attorney) for Duval County (1956 – 1960). President Lyndon Johnson appointed Mr. Mahon as a special ambassador to Barbados in 1966. In addition, Mr. Mahon was appointed by Governor Lawton Chiles as Chairman of the Public Employees Relations Commission (1996 – 1999).
Mr. Mahon is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nancy Nix Mahon; his daughter, Nancy Mattimore (Michael) of Tallahassee, grandchildren, Leila and Grace; his son, the Honorable Mark Mahon (Mary), and grandchildren, Harrison, Davis, Lacy, and Emma. Mr. Mahon was predeceased by his son, William Lacy Chip Mahon, his three brothers and a sister and his is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
A private family burial has taken place.
A Celebration of His Life will take place on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 10:00 am at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, 4001 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32207. Dr. Kyle Reese will officiate.
