Larry Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 20, 2017.

Lawrence (Larry) Wilson Allen
September 24, 1940 - July 16, 2017

Larry (Bobo) Allen passed away suddenly from a heart attack on July 16, 2017. He leaves behind his 2 sons, Drew (Jennifer) and Scott, along with 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, his beloved friend and companion Diana Beachell, his brother Robert Allen (Katherine) sister-in-law Tammie Tedlund (Brad) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless people who loved and will miss him. He was preceded in death by his parents Eleanor and Robert Allen, sister Patricia Pike (Dale) and his wife of 35 years Kaye (Wiegers) Allen.

Larry was born and raised in Upland California. While in high school he excelled as a football running back as well as in golf, tennis, track, and field. After high school he proudly served in the military, followed by attending Oregon State University, earning his BA in education. He began his teaching career at Andrew Jackson High School, followed by Wilson High School, both in Portland, OR. His primary focus was in graphic arts, photography, and English as well as coaching cross country, track, and women's tennis.

Larry was fondly known as Bobo by his students and teams that he coached, his cross country team proudly wearing 'Bobo Strider' jerseys. He loved coaching, and his students loved and respected him. He didn't just coach, he also participated, completing 3 marathons in his life, his best averaging 8:24 per mile. In addition he participated in many tennis matches and golf tournaments.

In addition to teaching and coaching Larry and his wife Kaye ran their own business, Inkwell Printing, out of their home for many years.

Larry enjoyed life and lived it fully up until the end. He traveled with his son Scott to New York for the US open late last year, had just returned from a visit to Arizona with his son Drew, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and was looking forward to traveling in a newly purchased RV with Diana. He was very close to his children who loved him dearly.

Larry was known to say he had a great life. Moreover, he made life great for a lot of people. He was a wonderful husband, father, teacher, coach, friend, and all around good human. He was someone that people loved to be around to laugh, tell stories, and get advice from and will be missed dearly by all those whose life he touched.

The following was part of a motivational speak given by Jim Valvano in March of 1993:
"To me, there are three things we all should do every day...Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears - could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."

Drew and Scott Allen wrote the following tribute to honor their father's legacy:
Our dad lived his life this way.
He was the only person we have ever known who was truly happy with his life.
A prime example would be these fine words of wisdom he left us to find written on paper in a briefcase with his final wishes attached.
" enjoy life it is for the living! I had a great life"
Short, simple and very true. Simple, sticky notes with who to call and a message "I love you guys and Diana"
So Take time to enjoy the people around you. Take in a beautiful landscape and nature. Most importantly, we need to tell the people we love how much they mean to us, tomorrow may never come.

An open house Celebration of Larry's Life will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 12-2 pm. Thank you for your kind thoughts for Larry's family, please share a memory or kind words by singing the guestbook through this memorial page.

I will always remember the great times we had together, at family outings and dinners, always with much laughter and wine...and his hilarious impersonations. Also the amazing way that he cared for my cousin during her illness, the excellent advice he gave when I needed help figuring things out. He was always a rock, I'll miss him so much. Still can't believe he's gone.

Coach, mentor, "Bobo" I was lucky enough to have Larry in my life from 1978 to 1982, I was new to Jackson and he welcomed me to the team and the school. You made an enormous impact in my life, fostering my love of running, photography, and printmaking. I was glad I was able to reconnect with you later in life and tell you that. Thank you for everything you did all the long hours and the support your legacy continues.

Whenever my dog and I would walk past his home, we would chat for a few minutes if he was working in his garden. He was always so kind. I was shocked to see a for sale sign in front of his home. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Mr. Allen (Bobo) was always kind and never got angry when I skipped classes. (my grades showed the absences though). He was a wonderful teacher and has never been forgotten, nor will he be. My condolences to the family.

Drew and Scott we will miss Bobo and we know that you are aware the Bobo Striders were an extension of your family and know that he was so proud of you and your families. We will miss him at our reunions but also know that his presence in our lives as a teacher, coach and friend extended way beyond the norm and we are all better off for it. Thanks for sharing him with us all these years.

Peace and comfort to Drew, Scott, Diana, family and friends. Although the Missouri Wiegers family didn't see Larry and the boys often, please know that we are with you in spirit and prayer at this sad time. No more beautiful tribute could be offered for Larry than the words written by Drew and Scott. Our love to all.
