On Sunday, January 31, 2016, Larry Colquette Stokes, Sr. went Home where he was reunited with Patsy, his wife of 55 years, and with his beloved son, Larry Junior. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at 11:00am at Central Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Rodney Queen officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Macon Rescue Mission, 774 Hazel St., Macon, 31201.
Mr. Stokes was born on a farm near Timmonsville, South Carolina on April 22, 1936 to Sam and Dorothy Hill Stokes. He was the first of three children. His sister is Sandra Blackwell of Hartsville, South Carolina. His brother is Perry Stokes, the longtime coach of the Timmonsville Lady Whirlwinds. As a boy, Larry was close to his grandfather, Olin B. Hill and was strongly influenced by the older man's faith. Larry's sense of responsibility and work ethic became apparent early. At age 15 Larry began driving a school bus to earn his keep while attending high school.
Mr. Stokes attended Carson Newman College where he not only earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, but also convinced Patricia Glee Robinson to be his wife. They were married in Flintstone, Georgia on June 7, 1959.
Larry and Patsy raised two daughters and a son; Kimberly Lynne Waggoner of Kingston, Tennessee, Susan Kay Ivey of Macon, Georgia, and Larry, Jr. They had four grandsons, Kirby Waggoner, and Joshua, Jonathan and Jared Ivey.
Mr. Stokes earned his daily bread for thirty years as a teacher in Walker County, Georgia. A teacher's salary in those days provided meager fare for a family of five. Larry often took part time work, including selling encyclopedias, however; his true calling was in the fields of the Lord.
Larry Stokes had a deep rooted faith in Christ founded on the Holy Bible. Larry served as interim music director at Flintstone Baptist Church and several other churches in northwest Georgia. He taught Sunday School for over four decades. His classes were noted for the sharing of burdens and cares, praying for each other, and teaching Biblical truths.
Larry had a great deal of respect for his friend, Paul Chambers of Chattanooga Valley. The Stokes and Chambers families spent two summers living at a campground while the two men studied at Georgia Southern University where Larry earned a Master's degree in Education. Paul remained Larry's close friend throughout the years.
Larry's best friend and constant companion for forty-four years was his son, Larry Junior. The father and son were devoted fans of the Chattanooga Valley Eagles, the Ridgeland Panthers, and the Lady 'Winds.

Always, always blessed by Larry's evangelical zeal. Rumor is he once shared the gospel to a flagpole and then gave it a track.
Only related by marriage and faith--but count him a dear and important brother.

Mr. Stokes was my teacher at Lafayette middle school back in the early 80's and as the years have passed I often wondered what happened with him. Mr. Stokes was one of those few teachers that you never forget. I am 48 years old now and I still remember the lessons (both life and school) that he taught. He was an outstanding teacher and role model. R.I.P Mr. Stokes.

When I finally reached Mr Stokes' classroom I was excited! Always heard he was an awesome teacher. He never forgot names! My first day in his class he saw my last name and his first question to me was.. "do you have encyclopedias"? I smiled and said yes. Come to find out he had sold my parents those encyclopedias and he remembered them! He was my favorite teacher and will always be! Rest in peace in that beautiful land you wasn't afraid to talk about and sit beside your Lord and Savior that you led many to know.
My prayers are with the family during this time and the days and months to come.

He was a great inspiration in my young life in Mtn. View Jr. High that I will never forget. May the peace of the lord be with his family now and in the days ahead.

Kim, Susan and family,
I was taken aback to hear of your father's passing. I know that we are saddened by the loss, but we must try to rejoice in the fact that our Lord and Savior has fulfilled a promise to us in that 'to be separate from the body is to be with the Lord'. Prayers and hugs to all of you especially at this time.
