SMITH, L. Virginia
Our beloved Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma (Honey), and Aunt gently passed on November 22, 2016. She was born May 20, 1925 to Rufe Lawrence Wallace and Orpha Motz Wallace in Spokane, WA. She was a graduate of North Central High and continued those close alumni friendships throughout the years. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Cary Smith on a leave from the Navy toward the end of the war and after his three years of fighting in the Pacific on the Yorktown. She loved being a military wife and lived and toured the East Coast before returning to family and ties in Spokane, finally to finish Bob's so abruptly interrupted college education which occurred on December 7, 1941. While at the University of Idaho, they began an entrepreneurial sandwich and snack delivery business well before their time. Once graduated, back to Spokane to raise two children. She was active in family life, leading several Camp Fire groups and was an enthusiastic booster for her children's youth activities in sports, church, and music.
Virginia worked as an Interline Clerk for Inland Motor Freight/Garrett Freight Lines for 28 years. Upon retiring, she became the world's best and most fun babysitter for grandchildren, friends, and great-grandchildren! She loved entertaining and every holiday was a special occasion to be celebrated. Her greatest peace and joy were with Bob and family at her lake home in Windy Bay on Coeur d'Alene Lake. She designed and built the cabin which was always filled with her personal touches and love throughout.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Bob Cary, of 53 years, whom she missed dearly. She is survived by one sister, Norene Wallace Bony; her daughter Kaye Aucutt; son, L. Craig Cary Smith (Jane); grandchildren, Callie Cary Bendickson (Ryan), Creedence Cary Smith (Rowena), and Cable Cary Smith (Heather); great-grandchildren, Andrew, Emily, and Brady Bendickson. She is also survived by several special nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held in the spring, a special time of year for her (May 21, 2017). Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House of Spokane, or SpokAnimal.
