1939-2017
Laurel Jeanne (Smith) Powell, 78, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away Friday, June 16, 2017.
She was born January 6, 1939 in Columbia, Missouri to the late Laura Alice (Cunningham) Smith and Dr. George E. Smith. On June 29, 1957, Jeanne married the late E. Dale Powell. She earned her associates and bachelor of fine arts degrees from Stephens College. She was on the faculty of Stephens College for over two decades teaching clothing construction, fashion design, pattern making and millinery and serving as head of the Art and Fashion department. Jeanne enjoyed her family, the beach, and traveling.
She is survived by her daughters: Holley Smothers (husband, Greg) of Lake Ozark, Missouri, and Mary Anne Dutemple (husband, John) of St. Louis, Missouri; brother George Edward Smith (wife, Sherrel) of Kansas; grandchildren: KariLynn Reeves (husband, Jason) of Overland Park, Kansas, David LaPointe (wife Elizabeth) of Columbia, Missouri, and Matthew LaPointe (wife Katie) of Kansas City, Missouri; great-grandchildren: Zachary Reeves and Noah Reeves of Overland Park, Kansas; sisters-in-law: Rafaleta Powell, of Springfield, Missouri, Janet VanNess (husband, Everett) of Independence, Missouri, and Karen Harshbarger (husband, Andy) of St. Petersburg, Florida; and brother-in-law Ricky Powell (wife, Judy) of Boonville, Missouri.
There will not be a public funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, she has requested donations be made to the Missouri Botanical Gardens, 4344 Shaw Blvd., St. Louis, Missouri 63110.
