Lawrence Wyte Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2015.

On Tuesday, November 3, trusting in the promise of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Larry Wyte passed into eternal life, at the Hospice House of Brunswick, Bolivia, NC, surrounded by his beloved wife, Diane, and his children, Kristen and Rob.

Diane was the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, and wife of almost 49 years. Their love for each other sparkled, a glowing presence to all who knew them. Larry and Diane met in high school where Larry played the drums in his band, The Royal Tones. They dated through college and married when Diane graduated, in January 1967, eight years after their first pizza date.

While Larry brought passion to his work, his family was the center of his universe, with his love embracing his children, Kristen and her husband, John Carr, and Rob and his wife, Robin, and their grandchildren, Cater, Mary Grace, Lily and Graham. Larry, the adoring and adored father to Kristen and Rob, was not only their childhood protector, provider and teacher, but a model that life is to be lived both responsibly and enthusiastically. His love for his grandchildren was poured out in his special style. Papa was the "fun guy" with the endless list of things to do and stuff to explore, so that every visit was too short.

Larry's career as a civil engineer, more specifically his career with the Mobil Corporation, led to moves around the country until a long stay in Fairfax Co, VA, where their children grew up and where Diane taught gifted students. In his career with Mobil he helped design the Mobil Fairfax Headquarters and was the engineer in charge of its construction. He was also the developer in Marketing for all the convenience stores attached to the Mobil service stations. After 9/11 he was summoned by the Federal Government through Greyhawk Enterprises to build a SKIF, a secured building in Alexandria, VA, to provide protected communication among the military services.

On retirement, and moving to St. James in 2005, he had the time to pursue more intently the outside interests developed over the years. He had a lifelong love affair with restoring Chevy Corvettes, bringing to them an engineer's appreciation of their mechanics as well as their classic beauty. His love of nature, his boundless energy and his aesthetic sense turned his property, with its stream and fish pond, into a nature preserve that earned a Cape Fear Audubon Award. In time he added bee hives and became a proficient bee keeper and an activist for their protection.

From marsh pruning, fishing, clam digging, woodworking and boating to Shag dancing and formal Ballroom Cotillions, Larry always found the world a place of surprising new things to know and enjoy.

We who were blessed to know Larry will miss his presence in the routine of our lives, but we will carry the imprint of his character and generosity for the rest of ours.

The Celebration of Life Service for Larry will be held at Southport Presbyterian Church on Moore Street on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11 AM.

Diane & family,

My deepest sympathy goes out to you at this time. I will always remember the good times I had with Larry at his parents house when I was a child, especially the 4th of July parties! He would always take me & our other cousins out for a ride in his cool Corvette, which was a big thrill! The fireworks he used to set off were also a big part of my childhood memories. I will always remember his smile & his upbeat personality! He will always be remembered with fondness.
