LAWTON DOUGLAS GRESHAM

Lawton Douglas Gresham, age 82, of Greensboro, NC, passed away in his sleep on November 14. Lawton is predeceased by his daughter, Lottie Cason Gresham, who died at the age of six. He is survived by his wife Laura Deane Matheson Gresham, daughter Deane Gresham Holt and husband George Edward Holt III, and son Lawton Douglas Gresham, Jr. and wife Susan Selph Gresham. His four grandchildren, Clarence Montgomery Mills III, Douglas Matheson Mills, Lawton Douglas Gresham III and William Anderson Gresham, will cherish their fond memories of "PawPaw". His infectious laugh and embracing presence will be remembered forever.

Lawton attended Guilford College, where he played football and basketball, and later graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He entered the United States Navy in 1953, where he served as a lieutenant JG in Korea. Lawton worked for over fifty years with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. In addition to his time with Northwestern, Lawton owned and operated multiple small businesses in the area.

Lawton followed his passions in ways that have left an indelible print on Greensboro and the state of North Carolina. The death of his first daughter, Lottie, from leukemia motivated him to lead the National Cancer Society of North Carolina for many years. His love for children and education inspired him to lead the founding of the Greensboro Day School in 1970. That same passion led him to serve as Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America, Troup 216 for nine years. He also gave his time to Greensboro through his involvement with the Kiwanas Club for over fifty years.

Lawton was passionate about vintage cars and motorcycles. He was a lover of world travel, via all means of transportation, whether it was an RV, a motorcycle, an ATV, a canoe, or a pair of skis.

Most of all Lawton will be remembered for his jovial personality, effervescent nature, and of course, that glorious smile.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Sunday in Phillips Chapel at Canterbury School, 5400 Old Lake Jeanette Drive. The family will receive friends after the service in Berry Hall, next door. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Canterbury School or the Boy Scouts of America.
