Leander Sherman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2013.

Leander R. Sherman, Jr., 77, of New Bedford, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Irene (Pastie) Sherman with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.

Born in Rhinebeck, New York, he was the son of the late Leander R. and Leona (Post) Sherman.

A proud Vietnam Veteran, Mr. Sherman served his country in the United States Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the V.F.W. Poirier Post 3260 in New Bedford and the Fleet Reserve Association.

After his military service, he worked as a machinist in several local mills until his retirement.

An outdoorsman and hunter, he enjoyed watching sports and working on his cars. He was an excellent cook who loved to feed his family and friends. Most of all, he loved the company of his beloved wife, children and grandchildren whom he adored.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughters, Sandra Deree and her husband Dana and Shari Crowell and her husband Jonathan; six grandchildren, Jenn Crowell and her partner Amy Case, Bethany Enzian and her husband Jeremy, Leah Poirier, David Crowell and his girlfriend Mary Paim, Amy Gleicher and her husband Mark and Audra Poirier; six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Devin, Amelia, Koen, Lucas and Lily; and nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late James and Douglas Fleischhauer.

Contributions in Lee's memory may be made to Community Nurse and Hospice Care, PO Box 751, Fairhaven, MA 02719. Funeral services are private.

I guess Uncle Bucky and I were always close because we only had a 12 year age difference, or maybe it was because we saw eye-to-eye on many subjects, or maybe it was just because every time we were together we had such a fantastic good time; or maybe it wasn't particularly our relationship, but rather it was because he was just such a genuinely great person that almost everyone loved instantly. Whatever the reason, I know he has touched many and we are all better because we knew him and he will be truly missed by all.

We all lost something when Lee was taken from us,but we were left better for having known him. His generous spirt and kind heart has touched us all. It is said if you have one real friend in your life that you are blessed, I was blessed because Lee was such a friend and he will be remembered with many happy memories. Peter Langevin
