Lexington - Lee Charles Applegate, 72, passed away peacefully at his home on August 12, 2017.
Lee was born December 9, 1944 in Los Angeles, California to the late Carroll and Helen Gilbert Applegate. He graduated from Illinois State University with a Masters in Safety Education. Lee spent his life in the service of others serving proudly in the United States Navy and volunteering as a firefighter in Carol Stream, Il and at the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia, S.C. Lee was formerly employed at ITV and as an Education Consultant for the SC State Department of Education in Columbia, SC.
Lee was an avid Civil War history buff and enjoyed raising his family, camping, riding his motorcycle and advocating for motorcycle safety, canoeing in Minnesota, shooting at his gun range, spending time with family and friends and spoiling his dog, Tresten.
Lee had a very kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his children, Stacy Applegate, Derek and Kim Applegate, Kurtis Applegate, grandson, Seann Applegate, sister, Nyla Wendle, brother, Kim Applegate, Aunt, Iva Chappelear, many nieces, nephews and cousins and his beloved dog, Tresten.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Lee touched are invited to a graveside service on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 11:00 am at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with lunch following immediately after at the home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Lee’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the American Diabetes Association.

Dear Applegate Family,
Ellen and I are sorry to learn of Lee's death. We were neighbors in the Gardendale subdivision in the 1970s and 1980s. Our son Ken and Derek Applegate were involved in the YMCA's Indian Guides program, and it was through this program, as a parent, that I came to know Lee. Lee led an exciting life, and through my friendship with him I learned a lot about the interesting research that he was doing for ITV.
