Leland Nehls Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 18, 2014.

Yakima- Leland L. Nehls, 90, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Leland was born on April 19, 1923 in Ferney, South Dakota to Charles O. and Ramona (Erdmann) Nehls.

He attended school in Groton, South Dakota. The depression forced his family to move west to Prosser, Washington when he was 14. He entered the service in 1943 at the age of 18. He served in the Army in North Africa and Europe. His experience in the military led to him to numerous battles and he was awarded two Bronze Stars, among other medals in 1945. He was a 63-year member of the Selah American Legion.

When he was discharged, he returned to the Yakima Valley where he was employed by Firestone Tire Company. After working his way up to manager, he decided to establish his own business. In Selah he had a successful service station and fuel oil business. After selling this business he started the Selah Auto Supply in 1962, which eventually became NAPA Auto Supply. He operated it for 25 years.

In 1948, he married Susan Cameron, and had 2 children, David and Patty. Susan passed away in 1958. In 1960 he married Carmil Nalley Tyrrell whose daughter, Judy, became like a daughter to him. They established their home in Selah where they continued to live until 2010 when they moved to Yakima. He was a longtime active member of Selah Covenant Church. For the past several years they attended The Presbyterian Church in Yakima. Leland had many interests including fishing, fowl hunting, boating, and camping. His highlights were when they took their grandchildren on the camping and fishing trips that spanned the state of Washington. He also took pleasure in attending all events of his children and grandchildren. Leland and Carmil enjoyed traveling including all 50 states and many foreign countries. He had a multitude of friends and thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship with those in his several coffee groups.

Leland was a humble, kind, and patient man who was always a gentleman. He was well-respected by all who knew him. He had a deep, quiet faith that stayed with him his entire life. His heart was full of endless and enduring love for his family.
He is survived by his wife, Carmil; two daughters, Patty (Don) Norman, Judy (Doug) Graham; a son, David (Nora) Nehls; brother Ronald Nehls Sr.; 5 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Susan, and his sister Loraine Rennie.

The family wishes to thank his doctors, dedicated caregivers, and friends who were supportive during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Presbyterian Camp Ghormley or Union Gospel Mission- Madison House. Services will be held at Keith and Keith Funeral home at 12:00 Monday, January 20th, 2014. Military honors will follow at West Hills Cemetery.

Mary MacKintosh Plyler

I only met Leland about 8 months ago, when he became a resident at Izzy's House, where my mother Frances MacKintosh was also living. Leland's sweet nature and charm was evident from the first day. His smile and subtle humor added to any interchange. Asked if he would like a snack, he often would respond "I wouldn't mind." I will miss seeing him.
