The daughter of titled aristocrats she was born in the landscape of post- World War I Europe. Her family emigrated from Germany to the United States when she was a young child, and settled in the mountains of New York State. An extraordinarily bright and talented woman she attended the University of Washington during a time when few women ventured into higher education. Columbus, GA- Lenemaja Friedman, Oct. 9th 1924 - March 2nd 2013

Lenemaja von Heister graced the world with her gentle presence on Oct. 9th 1924. The daughter of titled aristocrats she was born in the landscape of post- World War I Europe. Her family emigrated from Germany to the United States when she was a young child, and settled in the mountains of New York State. An extraordinarily bright and talented woman she attended the University of Washington during a time when few women ventured into higher education. Dr. Friedman later went on to earn a PhD in English Literature from Florida State University. Her professional successes include many years as an English Literature Professor at Columbus State University, culminating in her becoming Chair of the Department of Language and Literature. During her career she wrote four books of scholarly merit, published by a literary press. Enjoying an active retirement, Dr. Lee Friedman avidly enjoyed ballroom dancing, Tai Chi, Yoga and she also volunteered as a Docent at the Columbus Museum. An extraordinary human being, Lee Friedman left this world on March 2, 2013. A member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, she had a deep and abiding faith. She leaves behind a loving family and many loyal friends. She will be deeply missed by her four daughters; Joanne, Linell, Kerry and Sandra, her sons-in-law; Mike McCarty and Denis Grisard, and by her two beloved grandsons; Ben Peeler and Philippe Grisard. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Striffler-Hamby on Macon Rd. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with graveside service afterward. In lieu of flowers, please send donations either to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 4700 Armour Rd, Columbus, GA 31904, CSU Foundation, Richards Hall, 4225 University Ave. Columbus, GA 31907, or a charity of your choice .
