Leo Aguimatang Flores was born in Barangay Apostol, San Felipe, Zambales, Philippines on March 26, 1932. From the beginning, his parents, Demetrio Flores and Monica Aguimatang instilled in him the importance of helping others, and serving the community. As a young man, he served as Sacristan under the guidance of the late Fr. John Curry and Fr. Griffin.
Leo graduated from the Zambales Central Institute in 1956, and went on to join the US Navy in October 1957. During one of his few visits back home, he fell in love with Luz Cabatit. They were married on April 25, 1959 in San Felipe. A few years later, their son Raymond came to their lives, making their family happily complete.
While in the Navy, Leo served as a Seaman. During his time in the service, Leo was awarded many accolades including: the Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Quemoy & Matsu), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Civil Action). He eventually retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 22 years of service to a grateful nation.
Leo's commitment for giving back and his generosity was evident throughout his whole life. He allowed several of his relative the opportunity to live a good life by paying for their education, and supporting them through their endeavors. He wanted to make sure that he could share the blessings he had in life with those around him. In his spare time, along with his supportive wife, Leo helped to form an association which
eventually became the San Felipe Club of San Diego, who's goal was to create unity among the San Felipians living in San Diego. He and Luz also started the celebration of the feast of Ina Poonbato on January 25, 1997, and eventually were regarded as "Hermano y Hermana Mayor" of the Ina Poonbato- San Diego Chapter, because of their dedication to the fiesta. From its humble beginnings in their home, the annual fiesta in honor of Our Ina Poonbato has been celebrated ever since, and has grown year after year.
After retirement, Leo focused on his passion on gardening, and fishing, to the delight of his friends and relatives with whom he generously shared the harvest of his garden, as well as the various fish he caught. He also was an avid bowler, and competed in many tournaments with his friends. He also loved to go out dancing with Luz every Friday night at the 32nd CPO Club. He also loved cooking for his grandchildren.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Leo found most joy taking care of his three grandchildren, Ryan, Leah and Lesleah. He often mentioned "that his world was his grandkids". His favorite pastime with his grandchildren was to get ice cream with them, and supporting them by attending their various school activities.
Leo peacefully passed on to his next life on June 10, 2017, surrounded by his close family. While Leo may not be here with us physically, his legacy will live on through our fond memories of him.
