Leo John Huntoon, 97, W1RW, longtime resident of East Hartford, passed away peacefully at home on February 23, 2014. John was the beloved husband of the late Frances B. Huntoon, and was born on April 21, 1916 in Aurora, Il, a son of the late Leo and Edith (Burkhart) Huntoon. John attended and graduated local schools in Illinois, moving to East Hartford in 1939. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. John was deeply involved in Amateur (Ham) Radio, having been known for his call sign, W1RW, and served as General Manager for the American Radio Relay League and Director for QCWA for many years. Leo John Huntoon, 97, W1RW, longtime resident of East Hartford, passed away peacefully at home on February 23, 2014. John was the beloved husband of the late Frances B. Huntoon, and was born on April 21, 1916 in Aurora, Il, a son of the late Leo and Edith (Burkhart) Huntoon.
John attended and graduated local schools in Illinois, moving to East Hartford in 1939. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. John was deeply involved in Amateur (Ham) Radio, having been known for his call sign, W1RW, and served as General Manager for the American Radio Relay League and Director for QCWA for many years. He was known as a pioneer in his field. He was a true outdoorsman, with a love and appreciation for nature that he shared with his family on numerous hiking and camping trips. After his retirement John became a member of the Hike the Hockanum Trail Group, involved in conservation work, maintaining & blazing trails well into his 90's. He and his wife participated in many Elder Hostel programs throughout the U.S. and enjoyed traveling abroad.
John is survived by his three daughters and their spouses; Susan and Adams Shipman of Natick, MA, Kathie and Gary Schwarting of Boxborough, MA, and Laurie and Don Magyar of Winter Springs, FL, 6 grandchildren; Chris, Jon, Jen, Beth, Michael and Rebecca, 3 great grandchildren; Danny, Tommy and Ramona, and a sister; Mary Fleming of Monmouth, IL.
In addition to his wife and his parents, John is predeceased by his brother, Jim Huntoon.
A private graveside service will be held in Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
