GASTONIA - Leola Meeks McNeil was born Leola Meeks on July 11, 1913 in York, South Carolina.

She was the daughter of Samantha Meeks Pressley and Albert Murray. She was raised with loving care by her grandparents Harper and Hattie Meeks. Leola was the wife of the late Sam J. McNeil. She gave birth to 16 children and raised 17. Leola resided in "the home she built" on Titman Road in Gastonia, North Carolina for over 50 years where she raised her children.

Leola was a Proverbs 31 woman. She was a faithful member of New Home A.M.E. Zion Church in York, South Carolina for over 50 years. She was a woman who feared the Lord; a woman of strength, dignity and grace. She was seldom seen without a song in heart and praise on her lips. Leola was known to impart wisdom and faithful instruction. She was a merry gentle woman with a heart of gold and a caring giving spirit. She loved to feed her family spiritually and physically. Her cooking was famous amongst family, friends, and whosoever had the pleasure of being welcomed into her home. She watched over the affairs of her household and was seldom idle. Her children arise and call her blessed. Her family and friends praise her example of enduring faith.

Leola answered the call to come home to the Lord on Monday, July 1, 2013. She was preceded in death by four of her children: Clinzo Meeks, Sam Wiley McNeil, Richard McNeil, and Carl Parker McNeil. She leaves to cherish her memory thirteen of her children: Weldon Meeks, Mary Mae Robinson, Ella Bernice Hill, Levester McNeil, James Odell McNeil, Nathaniel McNeil, Cecil McNeil, Mary Branch, Charles McNeil, Ernest Perry McNeil, Barbara Ann McNeil, Lillian Francis McNeil, and Catherine McNeil. She is also survived by four generations of grandchildren, brothers and sisters of the Murray family, and a host of other relatives.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013 in the Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia.

Inurnment will be private.
