Leon B. Wallace, age 102, of Athens, Alabama passed away
at Athens Convalescent Center on Sunday, January 7, 2018.
A native of Coffee County, Alabama, Mr. Wallace was
preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Louise
Eubanks Wallace and his parents, Rev. and Mrs. W. V.
Wallace of Tallassee, Alabama, a brother L. Oby Wallace of
Eufaula, an infant son Leon Michael Wallace and a grandson,
John Scott Wallace of Athens. He is survived by his children,
Ann Wallace (Joel) Glaze, sons, John L. Wallace of Athens,
Dr. Joe Wallace of Ocala, Florida and Jerry M. Wallace
(Deborah) of Hanceville, Alabama; a sister, Opal Wallace
Harris of Montgomery, Alabama; nine grandchildren, 14
great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren and a
host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He began his career as a carpenter and during World War II
helped build the barracks at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia.
Later he became a store manager for V. J. Elmore's 5 & 10 Cent
Stores for more than 25 years in Samson, Sylacauga, Tallassee,
Scottsboro and Athens, Alabama. He left Elmore's in 1966 to open
his own variety store in Columbiana and later added two more
stores in Hanceville and Blountsville. In the final years of his career
he was a field representative for Singer Wholesale Company of
Atlanta, GA.
He professed his faith in Christ at a young age and as an
adult was ordained as a deacon serving in Baptist churches in the
communities where he lived. He was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Athens.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 12, 2018 with
visitation at 10:00 AM and service at 11:00 AM at McConnell
Funeral Home Chapel, 1200 E Forrest Street, Athens, Alabama.
