Leon V. Norwood, 87, formerly of Oklahoma City, passed away in Amarillo, Texas, on November 12, 2013. He was born in Orangefield, Texas, to Cassie and Ellen Granger Norwood, on November 24, 1925. He attended Lamar Junior College and graduated from the University of Texas. At UT, he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and earned a letter as Manager of Intramural Athletics. He married Ima Jean Bailess on December 4, 1953, in Houston, TX, and they celebrated 50 years of marriage before her death on July 2, 2004, after fighting a courageous battle against advanced colon cancer. He lived most of his adult life in Oklahoma City after relocating from Humble, Texas, with a job transfer. He held positions in management and sales at Top Value Stamps and Manpower Temporary Help Services, and also owned his own business. Prior to retiring, he held a position at Western Heights High School. He served as President of the Western Heights School District for many years. He was a member of Rotary International and First Lutheran Church.
He and his wife were fans of Oklahoma State University football and held season tickets for over 25 years. They always enjoyed travelling across the United States including camping trips every summer but went abroad to Munich, Germany, for the first time to visit their daughter, Darlene and her husband, Bruce, in 1986. Landing in Frankfurt, they made their way on their own, without any translator, by train to Munich. On this initial trip, they also visited Lucerne and Vienna with their daughter and husband. They continued to travel abroad with relatives and a group from New Braunfels for several years. He survived a leg amputation due to complications from cardiovascular disease in January 2005, and returned to living independently at the Wellington in Oklahoma City even though he was confined to a wheelchair. In September 2013, he experienced a bout with pneumonia and was recuperating at Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City until he was discharged on October 25, 2013, at which time he moved to Amarillo, Texas.
He enjoyed reading newspapers and magazines, watching travel shows, Judge Judy, college sports, and regular visits and celebrating special occasions with his eldest granddaughter, Melinda, and great-grandchildren (April, Eva and Ian, also known as "the boy") in Oklahoma City.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years; his parents, Cassie and Ellen Norwood; sister, Joy Bouillon; brother, Homer; and nephew, Leon Bouillon. He is survived by his daughters, Darlene and her husband, Bruce Brasington of Canyon, Texas; Cindy and her husband, Mike Sheppard, of Haskell, Oklahoma; and son, Doug Norwood, of Marietta, Georgia; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; nephew, nieces, and cousins in Texas.
Visitation is from 5 - 8 PM on Friday, November 15, 2013, with funeral services at 10 AM on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 8701 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK with interment at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery, 7801 NW Expressway.
The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers to OSU Foundation, designated gift to the Ima Jean & Leon Norwood Undergraduate Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship at Oklahoma State University, 400 S. Monroe, Stillwater OK 74074..
