I was reading Facebook entries on my phone the other day and was struck by how many people put a timeline to what they were talking about by what musical group they were in. It just shows what influence the music teachers, including Lee Meyer, had on their students over the years. She certainly did for me.

My one and only time to be in a music group. I remember Miss Meyer and that music room. I was in the 1968 performance of My Fair Lady. I would love to have seen that bracelet she wore which apparently had all the Operettas that she had been involved in.

When I saw the Guest Book open again for Miss Meyer, I had to re-read the entries. ( I did sign in 2012.)
So many wonderful memories. SWHS was a firm foundation for many of us. It is also a bond and privilege to say "I went to Southwest High". Guess we will always be music lovers and Longhorns thanks to Miss Meyer and Mr. Monachesi.
God's Blessings to all,

3/3/17 I just learned today, of the passing of Leontone Meyer several years ago, from my good friend and classmate at SW High, George Galakatos, Carmel, CA.

Among the people who we both felt had a very positive impact on us in those development years, Miss Meyer was way up there. My love of music and the participation feeling a choir can uniquely provide, were established in those many sessions with her in the SW Choir. She made a real difference; we will not forget her.
Respectfully,
Arthur Kriemelman/ New York, NY/Class of 1958.

I regret wasn't able to work with Miss Meyer. At the time, I was already directing youth choir in my church. It had been my intention to participate in both band and choir. Unfortunately both were scheduled for A hour. I chose band. Rest in peace Miss Meyer. Thank you for a life of service and song. SWHS 1981

In 1973 Miss Meyer selected me for concert choir. That was a real thrill. She liked me and always remembered me through the years. She was a tough leader and strong roll model for all students. Individually she could find a way to make a kind personal connection in the briefest of moments. We were very much her family and she made us better. For her military service she should be honored. I am glad she lived a full life. May the King of Kings and Lord of Lords receive our Miss Meyer with ostentatious fanfare.

Miss Meyer made an impression on me for certain. She kicked me out of the Boy's Glee Club... Oh! Thus she won my respect and I will never forget her smile. Thank you...

It might be strange to think about vocal music in its many SW forms as the place to learn courage-- the courage to dream and work toward that dream. This is what miss Meyer did for me. Simply, she changed my life. I wish so much that she might have known the depth of her influence. I know she did this for so many. She is in my heart and mind forever.

You do not forget someone like Ms. Meyer. As a meek freshmen in Jan. '54, I was accepted into SWHS A Cappella Choir and was offered a place in the "Early Risers" Unforgettable experiences. She insisted on perfectness without angriness and we always reciprocated to her wishes. She will never be forgotten.

You will always be remembered in the hearts of all your past students. I was very fortunate to be in the operettas in the years of 1961 to 1964. You are and will always be a remarkable teacher who cared so much for her music and the students she taught. May you find comfort in the arms of Our Lord.

Reading through the wonderful entries in this book of expressed appreciation, I am impressed by the variety and wide expanse of experiences students encountered through the influence of Miss Meyer. I, too, see my interactions with this amazing teacher as a major factor in my development as a teacher and human being. My visual memory of Miss Meyer is her presence on the piano bench, playing with one leg propped over the other, her body angled out on one hip as her fingers flew with great ease over the keys. Or the way she would girate her body as she directed a music group. Her crisp, matter of fact way of speaking kept large groups of us "in line" and focused. I also benefited greatly from singing in the operettas, each of the choral groups, especially A Capella Choir...I still know all of the verses of most Christmas Carols as a result of our caroling in Union Station and other performance venues. I was not a soloist, but she selected me for A Capella Choir as a freshman. I was not a great pianist, I but she allowed me to accompany Boys' Glee Club. I can remember the many hours I spent practicing "Stout Hearted Men" on the piano, and yet she never hesitated to brush me over on the piano bench to help me at the keyboard when I struggled. She recommended me as the recipient of the Washington University "Friends of Music" Award, even though I was never a great performer. It was her influence and that of Corinne Hachtman which molded me as a musician and teacher. As a result, I myself have written and directed many children's musicals, taught piano, accompanied choirs, directed children's choirs, and loved listening to the opera on Saturday's NPR at the Met. She taught me to direct a choir when I was president of A Capella Choir as a senior. And her music appreciation class was a highlight of my high school experience. How wonderful that in a world where children today are deprived of any mention of God in our schools, we of our generation were given a heritage of "Hallelujah Chorus" and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You." Thank you, Miss Meyer, for what you have done for so many. We are richer for having passed your way.

What I'm going to say about Miss Meyer's influence in my life seems almost unreal.
I am extremely grateful to Miss Meyer for taking the initiative with me as a young high school student at Southwest High. As a freshman I had elected to play the trumpet in Mr. Monachesi's band during A period which met at 8:00 a.m. each morning. For some reason not known to me even today, Miss Meyer invited me to be in the A Cappella Choir meeting at the same time.
I accepted her offer and it's my judgment that EVERYTHING good that happened in my life during the next fifty years resulted from her specific action: Not only did I immediately have the opportunity to sing in the Early Risers at 7:30 a.m., but I was then given a role in Brigadoon.
Consequently, because of that, I received nice choir and high school honors. Later in college, I quite naturally volunteered to participate in a multitude of choral activities, including organizing two student-led college choirs.
The same thing happened in college: because of my musical activities, I consequently received very nice college honors, and thus was selected by that same college to become a young college dean following my graduation.
Using that natural foundation, I ultimately became assistant dean of New York medical school and president of two universities.
There's no doubt in my mind I owe the majority of those life blessings to Miss. Leontone Meyer's initiative in my life.
I'm confident NONE of that would have happened had it not been for her action when I was a shy high school freshman. Her action was the key. She set me on a PATH that put me in a spotlight I would have never, ever experienced by my own initiative.
I am very, very grateful for her influence in shaping all of my life experiences. She, and with Miss Hachtman, were possibly the two most influential people in my life---in addition to my parents.
I say a heartfelt "Thank you, Leontone Meyer!" At age 7l I look back with much gratitude and fulfillment......and it's mainly because of her.

I remember my first tryout with Miss Meyer. I was so scared and shy, especially to sing in front of someone. But she had a way of getting me to belt it out and forget my fears. Concert choir was my favorite time of day because of her and her kindness to me. Little did I know that her help in overcoming my shyness was a lesson that has helped me as an adult. She will forever be a part of Southwest High School history and will live forever in my memories and my heart. My prayers go out to her family and friends. Class of "73

I will always remember the warmth and hospitality that Lee shared in her home. Karen held her aunt "dinny" in high esteem and now I too understand even better what her aunt meant to her. The spirit of a vibrant personality that touched so many lives as well as mine.

I had the privilege of caring for Lee the last two years she lived at home. I thoroughly enjoyed painting her nails, taking her out to lunch for french onion soup and fixing her a Manhattan everyday at five. Four years of jr. Choir automatically put me in concert choir senior year . Even though I couldn't carry a note, but miss Meyer knew she could count on me and John barrow to move risers from one location to the next. When I think about the energy and passion that you gave in Choir EVERY DAY, I am so thankful to have been in your orbit (1966-1969 at Southwest High School). Time spent in your classroom....is the time I will always remember as the best of my high school years. You gave SW that special spirit that still lives in so many of the Alumni today. Your legacy of achievement lives in others and will be passed on to future generations.

Truly I feel in debt to Lee Meyer whom I first met in Feb. 1948 during my first semester at SW High since freshman chorus was required. Later I took two semesters of boys' glee club, but what really delighted me was my senior year ('51-52) when Miss Meyer let me into a'capella choir (that was the only 'sport' in which I lettered!). By that time I had had many years of piano and one year of organ lessons. In that advanced choir students were serious about their endeavors yet we still had fun. Miss Meyer knew how to keep active teenagers in line and at the same time she fostered our developing love for music. Through her encouragement I performed a few numbers at 'Hello Day' aud sessions and she made sure I was involved in a few operettas where she and Corine Hachtman (another much loved teacher at SW High) were an impressive team masterfully leading us in our rehearsals. The last time I Miss Meyer was at our 50th class reunion in 2002. The vibrant presence of this 88-year-old contributed much to the joy of that evening. I am truly thankful for having known Lee Meyer. Clearly, she made a difference in my life as she did in the lives of a multitude of students.

The name Miss Meyer was the topic of discussion and affection nearly daily at school from 1961 to 1964, and since then has become virtually synonymous with Southwest High School to many alumni that I continue to communicate with regularly. I did not know the incredible story of Lee Meyer's life history until this week, as many may also be unaware. The Meyer family has a remarkable and very widely beloved member to be exceptionally proud and thankful lived to represent them so well and memorably!
(Anyone who has not seen the Post Dispatch article about Miss Meyer may be able to view it at this site: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/obituaries/lee-meyer-dies-legendary-southwest-high-school-music-teacher/article_d4060730-c564-5d8f-9286-7fc40d4df954.html )

May God keep you close to his side, Miss Meyer, as he can surely use the talents and infinite kindnesses of someone as special as you have been to the fortunate students within your care and influence for so many years.

1955-59. During my four years at SW you had me accompany for Advanced Chorus and Acapella Choir and participate in the numerous musicals and talent shows. I was timid and shy but you knew I could play the music. You instilled in me the desire to play in front of others. The piano was my crutch to come out of my shell. For the entire four years I accompanied and many many times soloed on the piano. Because of your inspiration, I continued with my music. To this day I give classical concerts, soloist with the Philharmonic, play for social gatherings, volunteer by entertaining in schools and nursing homes and have taught many many students the joy of the piano. With all my heart THANK YOU !!!

Miss Meyer was truly a talented and caring teacher. When I remember my high school experiences, I always think of her and the many musical programs she directed. I was fortunate to be part of various singing groups from Boy's Glee to A Cappella Choir from the years 1960 to 1964. She inspired everyone to perform their best with her great leadership skills. Not only did Miss Meyer love to entertain people, she loved to be entertained. It was a tradition in A Cappella choir for graduating seniors to put on a show for her. How she laughed and applauded as we imitated famous stars of the day and did take-offs on commercials and television shows. She had a great sense of humor. Christmas was a special time for Miss Meyer, for she took groups of carolers to various venues to perform. I especially remember going downtown to Miss Hullings. While singing “Silent Night”, one of the sopranos had a sudden, loud case of hiccups. All the cafeteria patrons were laughing. Later, Miss Meyer admitted that the whole scene was a comedy classic. Gosh, I loved her, and I know it may sound corny, but she was my favorite all-time teacher.

Miss Meyer was one of the guiding forces of my musical endeavors at SWHS '63-'66. She brought out the best a person had to offer and because of her guidance, even though I was shy, was able to perform in three musicals. Her confidence in me instilled the courage to perform before great crowds of people both here in the US and abroad. Under Lee Meyer's leadship the music program at Southwest High School was a bright spot in our lives. We loved singing in her choirs and performing in the musicals. I loved the music program at SWHS, being part of the Advanced Chorus, Girl's Glee, Band and Orchestra. Miss Meyer and Mr. Monachesi certainly enriched my high school experience. Miss Meyer taught us to blend our voices together in beautiful harmonies and provided a variety of music genres from which to learn. The annual Broadway musicals were a lot of work for all involved, but mostly a lot of fun. The community enjoyed them as well and filled the auditorium for each performance. I gained a lot of confidence musically from M & M and remember those years with fondness.

I spent many hours in room 400 in 1958, 1959 and 1960..I sang in the Advanced Chorus, Early Risers and Choir. I have so many memories of Miss Meyer helping me with the theory of music and music in general..we used to sit at the black grand piano that was in the choir room and discuss music during my study halls..I really enjoyed those times..she really knew music and enjoyed teaching it..
Rest in Peace Miss Meyer..

The woman so many students remember as Miss Meyer or The Colonel was my Aunt Dinny. Her nieces and nephews were often - for some of us it seemed like always - in the audience for SWHS musicals. They were amazing, and to me seemed as good as The Muny. My love of musicals started with my Mom and was cemented by Aunt Din. Not just musicals, but all things music.

The Big Event
Every year the Meyer clan would gather the Sunday before Christmas for "the caroling party". The heart of the party was Din, gathering everyone around the piano, passing out the songbooks and leading the least cooperative choir she ever had. There was much laughter as we warbled through the holiday classics. Let me just say, the Meyer women were not blessed with beautiful soprano voice ranges. Think alto, maybe veering towards bass. When we separated into male and female parts, the men beat the pants off of us - usually higher and always more in tune. The best song was The Twelve Days of Christmas. No one knows any day above eight but we can all belt out FIVE GOLDEN RINGS!

The caroling party - like everything Din was committed to - became such a cherished tradition that I often flew in for it as an adult and brought my children to experience it in the hope they would love it as I did. As many of her students have expressed, I didn't always see the gifts she gave me while she was giving them. As an adult, I saw Din as a living example of a phrase my daughter often uses - put your big girl pants on. Put your big girl pants on and do whatever that thing is you have been putting off. Put your big girl pants on and rake that yard, write that paper, go visit that sick friend, help others in need.

I think this is Aunt Din's legacy for me - do the right thing. Stand up like a Marine when you have to. Lead gently like a teacher when you need to. Enjoy life through music and theater and family every day. Pay it forward - Aunt Dinny did.

I was so proud to be a student in the SWHS music program! Being surrounded by so many extraordinarily talented students and attentive educators was a real blessing. And at the fore was Miss Meyer, who helped teach me the reward of hard work and the joy of a job well done...

Will always remember her smile as I was playing a clarinet solo in a Jan 1943 Senior Day program. I botched the introduction to the song but she followed my mistake with her piano playing so no one knew the difference.
During the 40's Betty Smith loved to sing and dance in many of the School shows directed by Miss Meyer.

I was a student of Miss Meyer for four years in Girls Glee '71-'75. I have such fond memories of those years with her as my music teacher. I hope she knew what a positive impact she had on all of her students. My prayers go out to all her loved ones.

I never hear The Hallelujah Chorus without thinking of Miss Meyer. Was there ever such a glorious sound in a public high school as the hundreds of voices raised in praise under her direction during a SWHS Christmas Program? Miss Meyer will always be remembered for her service to her country and her years as an outstanding educator. She lifted and touched so many lives. God bless her!

There are so many wonderful memories for me regarding Miss Meyer. She always believed that her students were the best singers. No piece of music was ever too difficult for her choirs or for her soloists. She was an outstanding vocal teacher whether she was working with the Boys' Glee Club or rehearsing with a soloist in the operetta. It was such a pleasure to sit in Room 400 and start the day with singing in Concert Choir class. As a teenager, I was always amazed at how quickly and effortlessly Miss Meyer was able to recall songs from so many musicals and play them from beginning to end with no sheet music. She enjoyed seeing that her students loved music as much as she did. One of the very first Concert Choir activities that I remember was when our large group sang a selection of Viennese songs by Strauss on one of the Veiled Prophet Parade's floats. What a spectacular evening! I remember learning how to sing "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" from the older Concert Choir members that night as we rode the school bus to the parade.
Many high school friendships were formed as a result of being in Miss Meyer's chorus, glee, and choir classes. Being selected to sing and play various roles in the operettas, musicales, and fine arts/graduation evenings were wonderful musical opportunities that Miss Meyer gave to many of her students. I will always remember those opportunities that she gave to me to perform in those activities. We will remember her dedication, her love for music and teaching, and for providing Southwest High School students with outstanding musical classes, productions and memories.

What a great lady! My mom was a student in the early days of Southwest and knew Miss Meyer. I was lucky enough to have known her also (1974-1978). Teachers came and gone through the years but there was always Miss Meyer. There must be some sweet music in heaven now. Prayers to family and friends.

There's something wrong with the idea of a world that doesn't have Lee Meyer in it any more. Part of it is that uncanny 'eternal' quality so many of us marveled at. From my first day in high school through all the decades after, if there was one constant in a turbulent world, it was Lee--in looks, manner, enthusiasm, devotion to music, everything. At SW she was a great refuge and encouragement to me as I felt rather alone for having a commitment to serious music. I learned much from her that has been valuable throughout my professional music activities, and appreciated our friendship, working with her on SW alumni programs, and stimulating discussions of music (and life in general) that continued almost to the end of her life. The annual parties at her house with other SW grads active in music were always highlights of my Christmas seasons. It's going to be hard getting used to the idea that she's not around any more.

I was a student of Miss Meyer's in the Boys Glee of the Fall 1957 semester at Southwest High. She heard merit in my voice and asked me to join the group. I will always remember her with great fondness. Some 50 years later I undertook piano lessons and ultimately learned to play the Southwest school song, something I wish I would have been able to play in her presence while she was alive.

Miss Meyer was a wonderful teacher that expected and received respect in everything she did. She was a true force for music. I hope the choir of angels are up for the practice, practice and practice it takes to be in Miss Meyers choir.

It is truly an honor to have known Ms. Meyer. Her kindness, genuine passion for teaching and love of the arts was an inspiration to me. I loved visiting her in her house on Edgar Rd; I can still see her smiling with a Manhattan in hand. My condolences to the family. May all the wonderful memories bring peace to your hearts.

Miss Meyer was a great teacher and helped my love of music which I continued in college. May the Lord give the family comfort during this time of loss of this great woman. She gave of herself always and her final giving was to donate her body for research to help others. May the Lord greet this wonderful kind woman with open arms. I feel blessed knowing her. What a magical world it is that so many former students have responded in such a warm and loving way to the passing of their high school music teacher. You were "her children". She touched so many lives in so many ways and loved every minute of it. As her sister, the love of music, theatre and the arts have also permeated my life. God bless you, Din.

Thank you for giving me a love for music in general but especially vocal! The highlight of my high school years was choir and musicals we presented. I didn't make it easy for you, which I am regret today. Yet you put up with me and allowed me invaluable experience that I still cherish today. Thank you so much!

As a member of the SWHS orchestra for 4 years, I got to participate in many wonderful events. The partnership between Miss Meyer and Mr. Monachesi produced outstanding performances. Her energy, enthusiasm and her desire to not just present wonderful music but to influence her students to be the best they could be were all visible as the choir sang the "Hallelujah Chorus" with graduates who returned to take their place on the stage and join in. One of many memories of the gifts we were blessed to receive.
