L.T. "Ron" Reeves Jr. passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013.
He was a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Commerce, and received his MBA and PhD from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. While at Northwestern he wrote cases for use in business policy and he taught business policy.
He was retained for six years, working directly for the president of Frigidaire, General Motors, as executive consultant. In his academic career he served with the rank of professor on the business school faculties of Samford University, University of Alabama and University of Montevallo. Major areas of teaching included marketing, finance, and business policy.
He retired from teaching in 1993.
Ron opened Reeves Properties in Vestavia Hills, and obtained his MAI designation from the National Appraisal Institute. He served the State of Alabama as expert appraiser for the next decade. Additional business interests included home building, and real estate brokerage.
He authored the well-reviewed "The Free Trade Trap," predicting world economy and the fiscal ramifications of the World Trade Organization.
Ron served three years in the V-7 program of the WWII Navy, and was gunnery officer on the Arkansas (battleship) during the shore bombardment at the Normandy Invasion.
Ron was an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School, and was a longtime member of the Whitfield-Jacks Class.
He was first president of the Shades Valley Rotary Club, and a charter member of the Vestavia Hills Rotary.
In later years he and his wife, Sarah, enjoyed the Galleria Woods retirement community, and were active in community affairs.
All who knew Ron remember his quiet strength, his wry wit, and keen intellect.
He was born in Birmingham, to parents Una Bell Gilbert Reeves, and Leronzo T. Reeves. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his beloved wife, Sarah Garrett Reeves, and three sisters, Wynelle Reeves Hurlbert, Myrna Reeves Deason, and Vida Reeves.
He is survived by his niece, Mona Hurlbert Fisher of Birmingham, and nephews Marshall Deason, Jr. of Tampa, FL, Gary Deason, of Toronto, Canada, great nephews, Lane Hurlbert Carter and Will Deason, great niece, Mary Catherine Robinson, children Renee Hyde and Allen Reeves, and grandchildren Tim Patmon, John Hyde, and Moira Larson.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 6, at 11:00 a.m., at Ridout's Valley Chapel with visitation following the service.
