Born April 18, 1936, in Surry County, he was the son of the late Dean Roscoe Hawks and Ida Leota Anderson Hawks.

He was born and raised in Mt. Airy, NC where he graduated from Franklin High School. Following high school, he entered the U.S. Air Force, was stationed in Japan, where he worked in special intelligence communications, and was honorably discharged after serving for three and one-half years. He returned to Mt. Airy, became a competitive bowler, sang tenor in a local quartet, and was a member of Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge # 691. He was also a freelance anesthetist and worked at various other medical facilities across North Carolina during his career and during his retirement, prior to his illness. Leroy was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Conover.

As a resident on Lake Hickory for 33 years, Leroy enjoyed boating, reading, and spending time with his family and savoring his wife's cooking. He enjoyed both fresh and saltwater fishing, playing golf, duck hunting, and fly fishing in the mountains of North Carolina.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 53 years, Savanna Carrico Hawks, of the home; daughters, Stephanie Hawks Drum and husband, Evan of Conover, NC, Kelly Hawks Lawler and husband, Brian of Arden, NC; brother, Wayne Spencer Hawks of Greensboro, NC; sister, Norma Hawks Payne of Mt. Airy, NC; grandchildren, Lindsay Drum, Emily Drum, Anderson Lawler, Kian Lawler, and Grayson Lawler.

A service to celebrate Leroy's life will be held in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home located at 940 29th Ave. NE, Hickory, at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 28, 2014. Rev. Colin Thornley will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 PM.
