Lancaster, Leslie Ann (Smith)

November 9, 1949 - July 5, 2014

On July 5, 2014, Mrs. Leslie Ann (Smith) Lancaster died at her home in Sarasota, Florida following a long illness.

Leslie was born on November 12, 1949 in Arnett, West Virginia. She was the oldest child born to George and Marie Smith. Leslie attended elementary and junior high at Mt. View School at Rock Creek. She graduated from Marsh Fork High School in 1967, where she was known as a fine student who participated in many extracurricular activities to include being a majorette for the Bull Dog Team.

After high school, Leslie’s parents (George and Marie) ensured that she would be the first in the family to attend a university. Likewise, both her younger brother and sister followed in her foot-steps.

In 1971, Leslie graduated from Marshall University, the Home of the Thundering Herd. As a matter of fact, she was on a date with her future husband (Ken Lancaster) on the night of one of aviation’s worst tragedies, which was recently depicted in the movie, “We Are Marshall”. Shortly after graduation, Leslie began teaching public school in Coal City, West Virginia.

In October 1972, Leslie married Kenneth Lancaster of Huntington, West Virginia, and began a life in pursuit of her husband’s career which took her from West Virginia to Florida, New Hampshire, and Tennessee.

Leslie loved to teach school. Of the many schools where she taught, she enjoyed teaching at the Booker Middle School in Sarasota Florida dedicating her work by ensuring a positive environment for all her students. She also loved teaching at Miami Senior High School, in Miami, Florida. There she was elated at the positive manner and respect bestowed upon her by her students of Hispanic heritage who took advantage of her teaching style.

Leslie led a fulfilling and adventurous life with her husband (Ken). She was an avid sailor and spent sixteen years sailing the keys. She and Ken owned a thirty foot Catalina Sailboat which they berthed in Key Largo, Florida.

At the age of forty-eight, Leslie learned to downhill ski and became quite proficient; skiing in New Hampshire, Maine, Colorado, and West Virginia (Snowshoe). Her favorite place to ski was Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe.

Leslie and Ken loved to travel. Her favorite vacations were to Paris in France and Rome, Pompeii, and Positano in Italy. And, she always loved the Florida Keys.

In the fall of 2014, Leslie and Ken had planned to return to Rome and the Amalfi Coast. Tragically, this trip would not occur. Leslie passed away in her home in Sarasota in the arms of her loving husband of 41 years.

Leslie is preceded in death by her father (George Smith) and her in-laws (Mary and Ed Lancaster). She is survived by her husband (Kenneth Lancaster), sister (Karen Evans), brother (George D. Smith, Jr.), daughter (Toni Anderer) and husband (Jack), and one grandchild (Jack Cruz Anderer).

Private funeral services were held Wednesday, July 9th, at the Weigand Brothers Funeral Home in Sarasota, Florida. Respecting her final wishes, her ashes will be scattered at sea in her favorite pristine sailing waters.
