Leslie Alexander Leiper, aged 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Alexandria, VA on August 2, 2012. Beloved father of Karen Haffmans and loving grandfather of Olivia and Maarten Haffmans. Born in 1933 in Bronx, NY, Leslie received his undergraduate degree from Fordham University in 1955 and served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 in Fort Rucker, Alabama. He then went on to receive his graduate degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and spent over 20 years working for the Defense Contract Audit Agency.
Despite his deep love for all things New York, Leslie moved to the Washington, DC-area in 1979 to open the local office of Leonard G Birnbaum & Co, where he was partner for 30 years. In 2009, along with good friend and business partner, Dora Clarke, Leslie formed Clarke Leiper PLLC.
He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia and New Jersey societies of CPAs, the Society of Government Accountants and the Contract Management Association. Upon hearing the news of Leslie's passing, one of his colleagues said, "Heaven just got a lot smarter with Les there."
Along with his daughter and grandchildren, Leslie is survived by Helen Leiper of Sarasota, FL and Eleanor Sullivan of Cape Vincent, NY. Arrangements are pending for a celebration of life on September 24, 2012 in or around Alexandria, VA. His immediate family gathered in mourning on August 3, 2012 in Springfield, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Leslie's name to the Covenant House in New York or the Central Union Mission in Washington, DC.

Les was the most intelligent person I ever met. His knowledge of Government contracting could never be matched. He was a genius who will never be equaled. I totally enjoyed my years working with him in DCAA.

No one can compare to the knowledge that Les had about any topic. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a true genius.

Les was my first boss when I joined DCAA in 1966. In 1983, after many years with DCAA he again became my boss at Birnbaum. It goes without saying that Les was Number 1 when it came to a knowledge of Government Contract Costs and Government Contract audits. Whether you had one year of experience in the field or 20, Les was head and shoulders above all others. His passing leaves a void in the Government contract community that will not be filled. Rest in peace.

My deepest sympathies to your family at this difficult time. Working with Les for 18 years was an experience I would not have changed for the world. His face would always light up when he shared pictures of his treasured grandchildren after a weekend in his beloved NY. We should celebrate his life and all his contributions to it. May you rest in peace, Les, you worked hard for it.

Les was probably the hardest working man I ever met; he earned his chance to rest. May he rest in peace.

Others have said it with more eloquence. Working for him at LGB&Co was not only a privilege, but an honor, as Les mentored everyone selflessly with an equal chance to learn and contribute. We had much fun, too! God, I really miss his laugh…. Karen, whenever he spoke of you, he beamed with pride. Our prayers & heartfelt sentiments go out to you, your family and everyone else who was moved by this great human being.

A lot of work, little play, time spent with your loving family. It is time to reap what you sowed. And now good-bye, dear friend.

Heartfelt sympathy to Les' family. At 40 years my senior, Les was my inspiration at the gym and he will be sorely missed. He knew everybody by name and I loved hearing about his pilot father and his own time at Ft. Rucker. Jungles Gym will never be the same without him.
