HOLMES, Maj. Lester C., USAF, Ret., 70, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, of a stroke after surgical procedures. After graduating from the University of Alabama he volunteered to join the Air Force in 1967. He served first as a meteorologist, and then as a computer programmer. After 20 years he transitioned to a civilian contractor, working many years at Gunter AFB. During his career he met all of the Apollo astronauts, lived in Greenland for a year, moved a dozen times, and programmed one of the most widely-used programs that helped fix the year 2000 bug. In his spare time he enjoyed making jewelry, wood carving, reading, and being with his grandchildren. He served as Local Secretary of Montgomery-Wiregrass Mensa for many years. Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Wilder Holmes, and his brother Ronald E. Holmes. He is survived by his son Jason O. Holmes (Renee), grandchildren Lauren and Sean Holmes, his sister Helen Underwood (Kenneth) and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the Magnolia Springs Library at 12440 Magnolia Avenue, Suite 600, Magnolia Springs, AL 36555. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service.
