Lewis Timberlake Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 13, 2012.

Lewis was born on December 14, 1931 in Levelland, TX to Milton and Neoma Timberlake. He passed away on December 11, 2012. Lewis was raised in Stamford, TX and graduated from Stamford High School in 1949. After serving his country in the Army from 1953 to 1955, he returned to Stamford and began a career as an insurance salesman. Seven years later he became President of the same insurance company. In 1968, he established Timberlake & Associates and devoted his time to helping others through seminars, speeches and training programs.

Paul Harvey once called Lewis "America's Apostle of Optimism." For over forty years Lewis was one of the most sought after public speakers and management consultants in the country. In 1999 members of the National Speakers Association bestowed upon him the coveted honor of CPAE and elected him to the National Speakers Hall of Fame.

In addition to being the author of three books, he worked with many companies including several Fortune 500 companies for over twenty years each.

He was the state campaign manager for John Connally's third and Dolph Briscoe's first successful bids for Governor. Other leadership positions include President of the Texas Historical Association, President of the Texas Jaycees, Vice President of the U.S. Jaycees, Chairman of the Texas State Commission for the Blind, President of the Texas Law Enforcement and Youth Development Foundation, and Vice President of the Texas Baptist Men.

Among his many honors Lewis was named Outstanding Young Men of Texas, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Five Outstanding Young Texans, The National Jaycees Hall of Leadership, Leading Men in America, The Texas Society for the Prevention of Blindness' Man of Vision, and the Institute for Management Studies Distinguished Faculty Award.

He was both a leader and a servant in his church. For over forty years Lewis faithfully taught Sunday School Classes at Allandale Baptist, Hyde Park Baptist, and Austin Baptist Church. He loved his church and found strength in both the Good News of the Gospel and the fellowship of his many friends there.

More than anything else he loved his family. His greatest joy was being surrounded by a family that he loved unconditionally and unequivocally. And was loved and admired by them in kind.

Those that knew Lewis are deeply saddened by his passing. He was a leader with a servants heart, a friend that could be counted on to still be a friend when everyone else may have turned away, and a husband, father, and grandfather that led his family by providing a Godly example of unwavering commitment.

Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don, and his son Craig.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years , Georgia Ann Timberlake, son Brad Timberlake and wife Judy, daughter Terri Clodfelter and husband Terry, grandchildren Lauren Timberlake, Brandon Timberlake and wife Emily, Jeff Clodfelter, Emily Clodfelter, step grandson Andrew Haggard, and great grandson Brady Timberlake.

The family will receive friends at the Cook-Walden Funeral Home at 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin, TX from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 14.

Memorial services will be at 4:00 p.m., Saturday at the Austin Baptist Church, 7016 Ribelin Ranch Dr. Austin, TX 78750 with Dr. Gary Dyer officiating.

Honorary pallbearers are the Lamplighter Class of Austin Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Austin Baptist Church.

Services are under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home.

I grew up in my early real estate career with JB Goodwin Realtors enjoying his seminars and listening to his cassette tapes. Wished I could get copies of his tapes he used to sell.

I met Lewis a couple of times while working for a company called MBNA. He was a great influence on me as an individual and as a speaker. I quote him all of the time when I speak. Thank you Mr Timberlake.

Lewis was a motivational speaker retained by my employer Mclane Company (based out of Temple, TX). I was employed with McLane America (based out of SLC, UT) between 1990 and 1994. Lewis had a huge impact on me when he spoke of having balance in all areas of your life. And he gave me permission to fulfill spirituality (1 of 6 areas requiring balance) through embracing my love and appreciation of nature, the environment and animals. So in honoring all creation and contributing to it's health I am being spiritual. Yay! Thank you Lewis. I think of you often. -Robyn Rieck

I met this great man when I was 26 at Bank Of America. He Inspired me to fly like an eagle, He dared me to find out exactly what wanted. I am in a change of business and a little lost so I decided to google him. Looking for direction and inspiration from him, I came across his obituary. Mr. Lewis Timberlake is still just as Inspiring in life and IN death. Your words live in me. I remember you when I was 26 and I remember you 7 years later. God bless you Sir. I will find a way or make one! Rest easy

I know this is late but I was looking up Lewis and saw that he passed. I use a quote of his when I talk to audiences.

I've just now discovered this obituary (during one of my Google searches checking up on Mr. Timberlake). He lived like few people know how, with a positive attitude and a great understanding for everyone he met. My time working for Mr. Timberlake was brief, but memorable. He was an inspiration, a mentor, and in many ways like a grandfather I never had. Because of this, I am very sad to know he has passed. I don't personally know a man still alive who loved his family more. I remember something his daughter once said, which I heard via Georgia Ann and will paraphrase: Dad was gone a lot, but then he was still always there for us. What a testament. This is how I remember him. I have spent the greater part of the last hour looking at the slideshow...those are wonderful pictures. Much love to the Timberlake family.

Lewis touched my life in 1982 at a workshop he led in Lexington, KY. He gave me an idea that helped change the life of one of my children. I will always be grateful.
He continued to send me "Letters from Lewis" after my promotion and move to Chicago.
He made a difference in many lives. A great legacy.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Lewis' passing. As a young executive at MBNA he made a big impact on me. I still have my "Round to it" coin! I stopped by the web site today to order some copies of Born to Win and found some used on Amazon. I now run the sales force for my company and two partner companies. Amazing how the first book I want to teach is Lewis'. I was in three separate events with him, one of which my organization sponsored. I will never forget how genuine he was and what he brought to me and my people.

I first heard Mister Timberlake speak at Texas Boys State in June of 2008. One of the most impressionable things he ever said and that I still remember to this day is that "God doesn't give us dreams just to taunt us." It was his exceptional conviction and his talent for tact that inspired me to more rigorously pursue the dreams God has given to me. I am saddened by news of his passing, but I am honored to have been able to receive some of the legacy he left behind. I only regreat that I was never able to write to him and say what a difference his role had in my life. But I know without a doubt that heaven is a brighter place with him in it - just as the world I know was made brighter through the words he said and things he did. -MH

Just as the previous person, I too was a Bank of America/MBNA employee who was graced by one of his seminars. It was great and inspirational. I was going to the website to share his thoughts and vision with a coworker when I discovered the news.

Thank you for everything. May his family be comforted that he has helped so many and made such a large impact on people.

I had lunch today with an old friend and was trying to quote some of Lewis's quote. I couldn't remember how he put one in particular, so I googled to give the correct quote. I was so surprised to see his obit. Sad, but glad that he touched my life in such a positive was from my MBNA days. Positive, inspiring and brilliant. What a legacy he left us in his words if you ever heard him, written works and family. My fav L.T. quote: "You become like those you spend time with." I strive to live my life in this manner. God called His wonderful child home to encourage all the heavens.

Lewis Timberlake was my Sunday School teacher. He taught us more than books of the Bible, he taught us love. He taught us friendship...he taught us everything you seek to learn from a Mentor. He taught those things because he lived them. It was such an honor to know him. We miss him so very much.

I just saw the sad news tonight. I was going to the site to order more material and wondering if I had a chance to see him again. His message, if you do even half of it, will trememdously improve your life. I want to get this material to my youngest now. So hard to think all we have on this earth of him now are tapes, books, and work books. I will do my best to keep fighting the goog fight. My heart and prayers go to his family. They have a huge loss and at a tough time of the year.

I am sad to hear of the death of such a wonderful and accomplished man. We here on earth will miss him but hs is heaven's gain. I a lot of memories from his many speeches and trips to MBNA. Would have loved for Bank of America to have brought him in for a couple of speeche. I loved his jokes and I am a much better person saying I have met him and heard his speeches and I learned from him. He was so full of life and gave all of us the perfect recipe for happiness.

I had the privilege of hearing Lewis speak many times at my old company, MBNA. I can still hear his life lessons on goal setting and how getting up and out of bed is the first step in leading a productive life. I think of it every day when I turn off my alarm clock. Of all the lessons he taught us for living our best life, his focus was always on love for family and God. Even in a corporate setting, his tremendous relationship with God came shining through and resonated with many of us who had the good fortune to listen to him. He spoke often of his family and I have no doubt he will be missed by so many people. My thoughts and prayers are with the Timberlake family. God Bless You.

Lewis Timberlake was the first man to convince me I needed to write down my life goals. 35 years later, I am still working on that list. Also, Drayton McLane gave us the privliege of having Lewis as a personal mentor during some challenging times.

In today's world, someone schooling you is a negative thing. But we, who had the advantage to have known, heard or read Lewis Timberlake, lead richer lives because of his teachings.

I can still remember my first lesson. In the early 70's, my University of Texas business fraternity had Lewis deliver the keynote address for our annual banquet. To this day, the energy and message that he exuded in, “How to Get the BREAKS in Life” still lives within me.

Later at Jaycees, the John Ben Shepperd Leadership Forums, Chamber of Commerce, Positive Connection and other events, he continued to impact me with the various lessons that he was an expert. Time management, goal setting and never quitting were among the topics. My most challenging presentation ever was following him on the agenda of a Chamber of Commerce program.

Eventually, I was fortunate enough to meet him and he befriended me. We would routinely meet over breakfast to discuss people we knew, similar interests and how to help people we had the privilege to touch. He always treated everyone when I was with him with respect and honor whether they could help him or not.

As late as mid-2012, he was still looking for ways to expand the impact of his messages and to help me in any way he could. He was the kind of man who always thought of how he could help others.

When I learned that his health challenges had returned, we had what would be our last breakfast in October. In hindsight, our conversation differed slightly, as I didn't hear the long term vision and ideas that we had been discussing.

However, as always, he was concerned about me and my family, and shared some of his irreplaceable experiences in order to expand my horizons. When he dropped a name like President Johnson or others he had worked with it was never to make him look bigger, but he used it as a way to help his listener to learn a lesson about people and life.

Little did I know that would be our last meeting, as Lewis left us days short of his birthday on December 11, 2012. To paraphrase our late mutual friend, John Ben Shepperd, “I hope I was half as good a friend to him, as he was to me.”

Our planet is worse off that he has departed. If you were blessed to know him, you will understand my sentiments. May his words live on and be spread by those of us who were so fortunate. He will be missed.

He made a difference in my life and I'm eternally grateful.
